The US has gone soft....for realz. The mentality of "protect our children" has really grown out of hand. Video games blamed for mass murders, teachers being unable to yell at kids, grade school kids getting labeled as sexual offenders because one grabbed the others ass, and 5000 ways to diagnose a kid who doesn't behave. There's ADD, ADHD, ODD, Autism (not the rain man type, the 300 other types), etc. The list goes on and on. It doesn't stop at kids either. I'm almost 30 and went to the doctor once saying that my memory is like swiss cheese and I wondered if there was anything I could do. I left having ADD and a prescription. When the month ran out, I called and said it didn't work, so he doubled the dose. I stopped going. Then, 2 months ago I took a screening test out of curiosity for autism (my brother deals with autistic kids so I was curious) and low and behold...I have a form of autism according to the test. We need to tighten up, call a spade a spade, and take some responsibility for the shitty kids my generation has parented.
I blame first the government for they did pass the laws, second the schools for trying to brainwash the kids so they will go against there parents(at least the schools that do it), three the parents for fearing the government so in turn fearing to punish their kids when it is needed, and fourth and last thing the doctors saying that kids have anything and everything under the sun just to get money and so the schools can get more money.
QFT If parents actually made an effort to enforce respect and obedience in their kids, and instilled the concept of hard work, instead of spoiling the kids, we wouldn't have so many problems. Parents try to overprotect their kids and hide behind their own failures. Can't control the kid? Oh no, I'm not a poor parent! The kid has mental issues! At least in my hometown, high school, and college, students with ADD/ADHD can qualify for in-class aides, get pulled out of class and access to 1v1 and additional resources, and almost always are allowed additional/unlimited time for timed tests. Sure, some kids may have issues. But in many cases, parents are using this as an excuse to give their kid advantages and additional resources to cover for either their lack of involvement in their child's education, or their child's unwillingness to work hard when something comes easy. Who suffers that kids get special help that others don't? Taxpayers who pay extra for this staff, and the other students who get less funding to help a small minority. Who suffers that kids get extra time? Everyone else in the class, especially at the college level, where classes may be curved to a mean, and the difference between having 90 minutes for an exam and having as much time as you please can be the difference between rushing through an exam and having the time to triple check all of your work. Just as an example, in the town bordering my hometown, they were planning to build new science labs. The plan got scrapped for more special ed. classrooms, and the taxpayers had the choice of increasing taxes (taxes are already ludicrous in New Jersey) or having no science labs. Lose-lose situation. We really need to be spending this money on science and encourage kids to move away from being lawyers and stock brokers into science-based fields.
Chrisbeebops You hit it to a key right their. I totally agree we need to cut back taxes everywhere they are getting to high in all places. One way would be for smarter running of school and use of school taxes.
