personally i recommend staying away from anything corsair as well, theyve always given me a bad vibe and the latest info about them has reinforced that. I run an N520 coolermaster HSF @ 4.5ghz daily and it runs very nicely. Overclocking is no longer the same as it used to be. All you do is increase your multiple (assuming you have a k series proc) and let it rip. super easy. i also run either kingston or mushkin ram, my previous built ran Kingston Hyper-X and was very happy and now one of my PCs is running MUshkin Redline 1866 8gbx2 and another pc is running mushkin essentials 1333 8gbx2. I had to RMA one of the value ram sticks and they had it back to me in a week or so. Super easy to deal with. Planning on buying another 8gbx2 1866 redline kit here soon. I personally use seasonic power supplies. I run a 1000watt platinum rated one. Not cheap but sooooo awesome. Definitely go with Samsung for the SSD
I was afraid of that.... for video editing and encoding all those files would be on the HDD since those files are very large so the only performance increase I will see in that area are the actual performance of the programs themselves and not the rendering process (IE the program is on the ssd and the upgrade on the cpu). Maya however is not an editor in that sense and all it's rendering is done in the program, with files only accesible within itself, that would be on the ssd, so it will see the ssd performance increase + plus the ram and cpu increase. It should be slicker than greased owl shit I wish SSD's were larger than half a TB and moderatly priced
If youre that concerned with hdd performance there is always RAID not nearly as fast as an SSD though, and a hybrid drive probably wouldnt help in this scenario. also you definitely dont want greens if you are concerned with performance lol
I've used corsair ram in a number of systems. It's fine, it meets its specs. You don't have to worry about it unless you want to mess with it, for the most part. Like I was saying all the chips pretty much come from Samsung or Hynix or Micron anyway. These other companies out the chip in a DIMM - that's important from a quality control standpoint but I wouldn't care too much when you're buying from a well established company. IMO ram timings are also a fairly overrated concept. I wouldn't pay much of a premium to bump it up.
Crucial just announced a new model that is for mass storage rather than all out speed. It is 1TB and costs $600. It would help your exporting because it is still faster than a HDD by a lot. The model is the M500. It will be available in a few months You can also set in Adobe programs to use a drive or part of a drive as a scratch disk for the active project, which if you had the SSD and set like a 50GB section to use as scratch could help with the speed of the program itself when you are making changes to areas of a video that is in full HD. And Elpida and PowerChip Now days they are pretty overratted. Before the "core" architecture came around they were very important, especially for AMD processors. Now they dont matter at all on Intel, just needs the MHz
Due to the Corsair paranoia I found a different keyboard that attracted my interest. went by best buy today and felt a black and red mechanical switch and liked the red switch better. Has anyone tried this keyboard out and if so how did it perform? It's not much more than the corsair one.
Its not paranoia if someone is really after you... but no, I havent had any experience with that keyboard. I forget who, but someone here (Mwhays I think?) has some pretty good experience with a few different mechanical keyboards.
I have a Rosewill with MX Red switches. Just a basic thing with no fancy extra keys but it works great. It's one solid peripheral. I think Reds are the way to go for general use. Plus it can use a PS/2 port (which actually is better for KBs than usb). I think Steel Series and some others get their basic KB models from the same OEM because they seem almost identical except for the labeling. (this goes for lots of Rosewill stuff, some things are crap some things are quite good or even the same as "high end" brands, save for the label) The Corsair KB gets pretty good reviews...if you like it I wouldn't be afraid of it.
I like that most recent keyboard I linked the best... custom lighting means different colors for my Q,W,E,S keys for moving around then plain red for the rest my current keyboard is the regular membrane style saitek that i have had for almost 5 years. most of the keys are worn off but it is still going strong. time for a new one though
That keyboard looks really cool! I am thinking if I upgrade I will likely get a filco majestouch ninja ten-keyless. I very much like having a backlight though. If you do end up with that board I would very much like to hear your thoughts on it. Very cool how customizable they have made it.
There a few of us in the FPS div that have decent exp with keyboards, specifically mechs, personally i run browns at home and at work, in the forum of the ione xarmor for work and a black widow ultimate stealth for home. i think squirl is running a das pro with blue switches, personlly i dunno why one would bother with blacks or reds... not sure if hays has any experience with mechs.
"..not sure if hays has any experience?" oh, bishop... Yes, I have experience with mechs. I use a basic Razer Black Widow w/ Blues at home. good keys. stupid font printed on keys. good layout. I use a very nice Das Keyboard S at work. (S is for silent- as in it use Cherry Browns.) Its the single greatest keyboard i've ever used. Extremely well built. very nice. Very basic. The newer version has the media keys, too. Very nice. I'd recommend it to anyone. Everyone at work who tries it has tried to buy/steal it.
Ps Loeben - the SINGLE most cost effective thing I ever did for my video rendering was move to SSD's. They make a BIG difference. The way I work is I use an SSD as a scratch disk. Just one big ass 240GB scratch disk. Its completely blank at the beginning of a project, and it gets filled up pretty quick with the DVCPro format I customarily edit in. The final edit is printed to a traditional spinning disk hard drive for long term storage and distribution. I have a ton of practical experience in A/V editing and building computers to make it work. Hit me up in TS (I'll be in the FPS division, or the guys there will know how to find me and get me there) and I'm happy to discuss this anytime. We can hash out the details and post a summary on the thread to help any lurkers.
I ended up going with the MAX custom build for my mech keyboard. Here is the specific Max model I got: Link And here is the custom lighting I set up (I use QWES for movement instead of the traditional WASD - a bit odd I know. Numbers 1-3 for TS chat and 4-6 for in game voice coms. T for third person view while piloting my Lib/Gal) and the free extras that came with it: 1 x Max Keyboard Signature Cable Strap, 1 x Plastic Key cap Removing Puller, 1 x R4 1x1 Cherry MX Key cap Set After ordering my total price for it was: $184.98 Only took them two days to build it and get it in the mail. Should be here this coming Wednesday. Will post back how it goes after that. On a side note I ordered all my new build pc parts on Tuesday and it got split up into three different shipments coming from three different places (Canada, Tennessee, and Michigan). Shipments 1 and 2 made it to my doorstep this evening, shipment 3 was lost by newegg according to fedex and lost by fedex according to newegg, then later found sitting in a warehouse at newegg and it just finally got dropped off at the fedex warehouse this evening when last I checked. Fedex is now saying it will be here tomorrow evening. Newegg's recompense for losing my shipment and delaying my build for another day was to give me back the cost from next day delivery for second day delivery - a whopping 20$. Think this will be my last round of purchases with newegg. Such a shame as I have probably spent about six or seven thousand bucks there over the last 5 years.
All the parts I posted about earlier are in and put together and working fantastic (keyboard should be here Wed). man this SSD and i7-3770k is so much faster than my previous i7-920 and 7200rpm hdd. Been up and running now for about 6 hours updating windows and installing most of my programs. I had also got a new cisco router since this router I had was the first version linksys switch. It still works, it's just not as good as the new cisco router's and not nearly as fast as this new one. I plan to spend tomorrow finishing installing the big programs like maya, vegas and all the adobe suites and putting in that new router. I also managed to get about 700ft of plenum cat 6 from a work buddy a couple weeks ago so I intend to pull through all my current cat 5 wiring. I haven't mucked with putting connectors on cat 5 in about 6 or 7 years so that should be fun. After I get all this done I'm hoping to OC this new CPU a bit, so I will be looking for instruction on that. Obviously I can go to overclockers.com and get help but if it is as easy to OC on a 3770k and the asus mobo I got as everyone says, maybee one of you guys/gals can set me straight and save me some time with a tutorial or something?
Over clocking the Ivy Bridge processors is as easy as upping the multiplier and just making sure you have enough vCore to keep it stable (and the cooling for it as we'll). I have my 3570k at 4.5 without any vCore increases and its stable with great temps. You will have no problem pushing 4.0 at least.
This thread needs more pics! To overclock Ivybridge: 1. change multiplier 2. Change voltage To get a good number to start from I would head to overclock.net and see what people generally have had luck with and start there. Just remember, above 4.5 you will get a lot more heat. That's the quick and dirty and really all that I did. I'm messing around with PLL voltage right now to see if it lowers temps any.
This mobo comes with an asus software that overclockes for you, if you choose to enable it. Tried the lowest amount of overclock profile and it raised me to 4.4GHz. Prime 95 has been running for the last hour, still is while im on here typing this and this machine is just purring along with no problems (doing the torture test). all 4 cores of the cpu are maxed at 100% usage currently and have been for a little over an hour and my temps are: CPU: 36.0C Motherboard: 27.0C How long should I let this thing run? Gonna go for another hour if I dont hear back from anyone within that time.
