the problem with tall sigs is if your post is longer then the postbit, then it adds tons of wasted scrolling. Anyways I think yoru right that it's the postbit on the right that causes it... I can can set the post bit to be above each post, but that means more scrolling as well Dash also has the MSN logo which adds a bit more height to the postbit area as well.
