    I just ventured into the matchmaking system, and jesus christ that was a hellhole. People were crashing left and right. Took forever to get my nerd points.

    The PS version seems stable now, i'm able to join and host games and not crash at least, still only in the 3rd act, but taking my time. Really enjoy it still though, I did find the brown skull by chance, but not sure what to do with it.

    Weird. Might be people and their shitty computers. I've played since day one using the matchmaking thing and never had a problem. Minus the fact that Matchmaking was down for a couple days heh.

    A few notes first
    - It is reported that the game plays better with a gamepad - so it's time to plug in that 360 controller. Using a gamepad eliminates the mouselag in the menus. Some people report that playing with a gamepad and disabling keyboard/mouse even fixed their graphical/framerate issues. Also a gamepad allows you to turn on the analog combat in options. It takes some getting used to but is well worth it.
    - Sam B is the easiest first playthrough character choice.
    - To do a dodge move - hold left, right or back and tap jump.
    - You can cancel the rage ability by using it again so you can at least save some of the bar before it depletes completely.
    - Checkpoints save your quest/character progression and inventory and NOT your location so you restart at the nearest safehouse after loading.
    - If you want an early gun,
    there's revolver in one of the bungalows in the middle area, far right. There's also a civilian you can save there.
    - Getting a shitload of cash any time (this is by kinda cheating) -
    throw a melee weapon and immediately after it leaves your hand, open your inventory and drop that same weapon. Now there should be two of that weapon on the ground!

    A very good bugfixing thread on Steam forums

    :siren:If you don't find a fix for your problem don't hesitate to contact developers at techsupport@deepsilver.com - the more you bother them the more likely they'll fix things

    Q: My game won't even start
    A: Go to your Steam folder and locate your Dead Island folder under your program files/steam/steamapps/common/deadisland/DI/data and locate the game.ini file. Open it and scroll down till you locate locale("En") and change it to locale("en") and then save it. Change the file to read-only.

    Q: My saves are gone or corrupt!
    A: there is hope:

    1st: if you played pre-patch this is what developers have to say: please note that this update may cause incompatibilities between the incorrect version of Dead Island that was released and the fixed version and cause a wipe on some saved data. However, we have a solution to help regain some quest progress: When the game opens, select New Game -> Select the same character as you were using before, and then there will be an option for "Chapter Select" which will allow the player to jump to the last chapter they were playing in. :downs:

    2nd: if your save doesn't work or is corrupt: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=25023768&postcount=1

    Q: Microphone toggle? People keep breathing into my ears
    A: There are several solutions (none perfect):

    1st:To simply disable in game chat:
    -Edit Data\Scripts\Audio\audioproperties.scr
    -Search SpeechCoop
    -Change VolumeMultiplier to 0.0
    -Save
    -Copy File to C:\Users\<Log-In-Name>\Documents\DeadIsland\out\Data\Scripts\Audio

    2nd: A solution for using a mic with mumble:
    -Unplug your microphone
    -Start the game, get into the actual 3d part of the game with your friends
    -Replug your microphone
    -Start mumble, enjoy actually functional voice coms.

    3rd:It's a crappy idea, but if you download a demo of Avnex Voice changer or some other voice changing software, it leaves a virtual sound device on your computer when you uninstall it. Then you can go into your sound device settings in the windows control panel and select it for record, ingame chat from you will be silent. But since you specify the device for use in skype/mumble/ventrilo separately from what windows uses by default, you can still talk over that.

    Q: I changed controls but "F" key still works as use etc.
    A: A new solution: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=25154980&postcount=1690; another solution: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=24989995&postcount=325

    Q: My sound was ok and now it's completely fucked up
    A: Go to User>MyDocuments>DeadIsland>out>settings and open "Audio.scr" with notepad/prefered text editor. Change "API "XAudio2" (or whatever your setting is currently) to "aOpenAL" save, run the game, quit back out then change "aOpenAL" back to "XAudio2".

    Q: My rig is good but game runs like shit, tearing, low fps etc.
    A: Try using a controller and disabling Kb/m. Controller and tweaking the ini making it read only can help. You can also try using the Dead Island utility.

    Q: When I shift-tab to bring up the Steam overlay and chat with my friends the mouse pointer stays visible at all times in-game when I close the overlay. MY IMMERSION.
    A: Hit ctrl-alt-del, bring up the task manager, and then just close the task manager once it comes up, that should fix it.

    GRAPHICS STUFF GOES HERE TOO

    An amazing Dead Island utility is out! It sets everything for you by clicking boxes - fov, bloom, blur etc. etc. It boosts performance too - a must have! Download it here. You don't have to keep it running - you can close it after you select what you want. All it does is create/adjust the necessary files in the Documents/DeadIsland folder.

    Manual performance tweaking for dummies. Easy, step-by-step video guide when you want to do it yourself.

    Q: Analog controls for...mouse and keyboard?
    A: Yes! http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=25018481&postcount=57. Note: this brings up a 360 overlay when you want to accept a quest BUT actually your mouse is still active, you just can't see it nor any confirmation that you're over the button. So if you can dead reckon to the button and click you are all good. Even if you mess up and decline you can just try again it seems.

    Q: Using mouse-scroll to change weapons?
    A: This requires no modding:
    -Navigate to the Controls - Keybinding menu
    -Scroll down to the "Quick Inventory" key, which is set to MMB as default
    -Left-click "MMB", then scroll the mousewheel down
    -Click "OK"
    A: You can also mod this: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=25046681&postcount=884

    Q: Disabling intro movies?
    A: Yes! http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=24920841&postcount=4

    Q: Windowed mode?
    A: It's a yes! yet again! http://forums.steamgames.com/forums/showpost.php?p=25035515&postcount=2

    Q: Bloom killed my parents, blur killed my children, fov killed my pets and I'm a cat lover!
    A: If something can't be fixed by the Dead Island utility you can probably find it here: a huge Steam Forums thread about performance - changing fov, motion blur, weapons blur, bloom, mouse sensitivity etc. you name it. It has it all.

    Q: Disabling camera shaking?
    A: It's possible - http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2115367

    Here goes a quicklist with some settings anyway:

    How to make it look like on those sweet screenshots:

    Here are options that allow you to turn Vsync off, toy with resolution and other graphical effects
    People with some experience with Call of Juarez tweaking found that the following changes can make your game look much better while at the same time it runs smoother:
    - Go to C:\Users\(your username)\Documents\DeadIsland\out\Settings\
    - Open Video.scr in notepad (back up the file first just in case)
    - Change these settings accordingly (Think first! Does your rig support 1920x1080 resolution? No? Then better set it to your resolution):
    Code:
    Resolution(1920,1080)
    Monitor(0)
    BPP(24)
    FSAA(16)
    TexBPP(32)
    TextureQuality("High")
    Filtering("AnisotropicTrilinear")
    Fullscreen()
    Shadows("High")
    ShadowMapSize(1024)
    SpotShadowMapSize(4096)
    Lightmaps()
    GammaFloat(0.80)
    MaxRefresh(120)
    MaterialQuality(0)
    FXQuality(3)
    FXFadeLevel(0)
    WaterQuality(0)
    GrassQuality(0)
    EnvQuality("FullDynamic")
    ShaderPath(3)
    VSync()
    DisplayDeviceType(0,0.000000,1.000000,1.000000,1.0 00000)

    - Save the file and set it as read-only
    - Here you can find a nice guide about what those settings do and what you could still change: Tweak guide
    - Different set of settings posted by our own An Unoriginal Name here

    Q: Can I change the FOV?
    A: Yes:

    1st method: Patch your engine dll, extract Data0.pak, open \Data\Skills\default_levels.xml, change <prop n="CameraDefaultFOV" v="62.5"/> to ~80, replace it in the pak. Don't go above ~82.5, you start seeing absurd animations.

    2nd method: Edit the CameraDefaultFOV cvar located in Data0.pak/Data/Skills/default_levels.xml

    To do so, simply extract the file, locate your Dead Island folder in your user's documents folder, where your audio and video settings are already saved, and create a "Data" folder, a "Skills" subfolder, and place the default_levels.xml in the skills sub folder. Open the file, edit away.

    90 degree FOV: [IMG]; 62.5 (default) FOV: [IMG]

    To be clear, your DeadIsland folder should have this structure:
    DeadIsland
    ->out
    ->->data
    ->->->skills
    ->->->->default_levels.xml
    ->->logs
    ->->settings

    Just finished the game, still enjoy playing it, going for the platinum trophy on PS3, somehow I managed to miss 3 areas to explore, and I'm only level 35. Other than the videos sometimes not making any sense at all, it was a really good game. Buggy of course, but it's just fun to pick up the controller(yes a controller!) and smash some zombie skulls in.

    Yeah, I am only 67/72, but I remember the patch screwing with all the achievements and going back to 1/72 after being about 6 or 7, and i wasnt able to explore them again, hopefully they patch that so I can get my plat. Hit level 40, 10 more to go!

    I thought this game was a bit of a dud. I need to find a shotgun cheat, it would make the game 100x better imo.

    Yeah I made it level 40, got all the other trophies, minus the level 50 one, but the game crashes so much on the PS3 it's annoying to even try to hit level 50.
