You say that, yet it happens so frequently that it's pretty ridiculous not to expect it to happen, IMO. It's a lot easier to argue with people on the internet, and everybody has pet peeve topics that really irk them and er, "get their panties in a bunch". I don't really care because I just turned off sigs anyway, but if that option were not available I would request that it be work safe. That goes for threads, as well - if you're posting a not safe for work image, link, movie, w/e... it's common courtesy to warn people of that.
How about we just post it on the thread, or PM it to myself, or someone and we can determine if it is appropriate or not?
Yea I was gonna say that since so many people have thoughts on it lets just see it then we can all judge it
I dated a woman without a nipple once, result of breast cancer. She was Awesome, and her boob was cool too. If you post the sig, it may give me flashbacks....
Being "mature" is a very wide spectrum term, what I would like to see from our members is that eventually they will learn to be less abrasive to each other. Just because someone is 18+ doesn't mean they won't get offended when you tease them, berate them, discriminate them, or just generally be a douche. Being "mature" is no excuse to ridicule others for not living up to your lack of superficiality and demanding people conform to your standards, last time I checked XoO's standards were indicative of supporting this idea, but what do I know, last time I brought up XoO's standards passively I nearly quit from a member continually and aggressively berating me. Point being, what I would like to see in XoO is that it is a family, a sanctuary from the sort of shit you find in other dysfunctional systems... but until we have objective standpoints and guideposts in guild philosophy and morality we will continue to accept everyone from the LG to the CE and simply boot when needed, and I guess this is a good answer and lesson to be less judgemental, because if the system works, huh?
Well said. I think the strongest argument against that type of signature is that it isn't work/child safe. Even though it may not show nudity, it can still get someone in trouble at the workplace because of how scandalous it is. I mean I agree that people should be free to express themselves, but that's just the way the workplace works--face it, at least for the time being. Plus, if someone has kids those kinds of images can be inappropriate if they're around. I'm not the sort of person that hates "drama". I think conflict is healthy and abandoning issues like this is a bad idea because it doesn't help anyone. To be honest, I would say that if someone is trying to make an artistic statement with their signature and use this type of material then they must be able to back up the fact that it is something that has some kind of seriously artistic end to it. For instance, it would certainly help to prove this if you included other elements in the signature. Don't just make it some "dick-and-fart" joke, because, although that's funny between adults, forum sigs are not the place for that because they can be seen in every post.
Although this is hinting at a blind cliche, it really depends on the intent behind it, and that usually shows though in the final product. To not put people off simply by the wording, I leave this post as rhetoric and subjectively concluded, I do not expect any conflict out of this point. Vs
I never thought I'd see myself saying this, but Lev wins the thread. He hit the nail on the head. Although... I do wonder exactly what he had to google to get the second picture. =O
Just to reiterate, both of the images above could get me in trouble at work. I don't find either image offensive, but the wrong person walking by my cube probably would. It shouldn't be so prudish, but it wouldn't matter. I'd lose my job with no defense possible. So even though we can and should have healthy discussions about community standards, I didn't want to ignore the pragmatic problem with the sig content. I would dread not being able to view the forums at work.
I hope you don't think I've ever judged you. I read your posts and come to the conclusion that I equally dislike most of them I agree that even if we came to one conclusion or another about this topic, there's still the "NSFW" bit that a handful of people need to be concerned about. I know earlier in the thread someone mentioned turning off signatures so you can view the forums at work, but I'm not sure if I think that's fair. What I think is more fair is asking our members to keep their signatures clean so that anyone can view them at any time.
I think what would really go far in terms of the original topic (one specific picture) would be to provide the picture as a hard link (i.e. not with
Sid is pretty much right... Keep the sigs and avatars safe for work. I do a lot of my forum work while waiting for things to compile or during downtime at work, and I while I enjoy the not safe for work content sometimes, I don't want it in every thread and post someone makes. Members had gotten into the habit of putting NSFW warnings on threads / links that people might not want to open while at work and I think that is probably a good idea again.
