I'd like to see it succeed as well. Just to show that MMOs can be successful without copying WoW, even if they won't be anywhere near as successful. Pity it's not looking hopeful. Though, given how close CU will get with the kickstarter, it's possible that another backer might appear. It's happened before.
Well CU is only 270k-ish away from 2mil. So there is a very big chance it'll make it. I backed @50$. Just for the sake of my DAOC love.
i will be throwing in tomorrow likely as well, i kind of wish i had backed earlier just to get into some of the engine demo events they have done already
50K away from the goal. It looks like we are going to have a new pure RvR game in development for the coming years, I am already drooling over the bard(speed) class.
Well considering that DAoC is most likely one of his babies when it comes to concept and design, and then after the "failures" of Warhammer and leaving Mythic not wanted to create another game was a pretty big life choice. To have others re-inspire you towards what you are passionate about (RvR, Old School Mechanics, and Community) and then be supported by literally thousands of people who pledge an average of over a hundred dollars each really shows the testament to the gametype. All of those teenagers and middle age men/and women who grew up on DAoC are now in the right age to to fund an independent project. Shadowrun was very much the same way, and while I don't believe in giving up my foundation that all MMOs are shit at launch for this game. If there is one thing to be said about niche games like EvE Online, is that they are amazing beyond what any all catering game can be (World of Warcraft, Wildstar, Guildwars 2, etc).
True. But is Eve Online really a niche game, or has WoW thrown off your sense of proportion regarding the number of subscribers to an MMO ? The latest data I have is that it has over 500,000 subscribers. Now to estimate their annual revenue. The cheapest subscription is $131.40 per year ($10.95 per month). I'll assume everyone is paying that to get a lower limit. That's still $65.7 million per year. Does that sound like a niche amount of revenue to you ? Now consider that some people will be paying the more expensive plans, and I've heard that paying for your subscription via PLEX means more revenue for CCP than paying monthly. So their actual revenue is going to be significantly higher than my estimate.
EvE wasn't always that big, remember that the game started out with a terrible launch and release and has slowly been building up subs since due to excellent content management and design. And you know, Gamers in 2013 aren't as bad as they were ten years ago, better trained now. Edit: So as a quick poll, how many Xoobies pledged at least a digital copy? http://www.xoohq.com/forums/group.php?groupid=31
Still an ultra long way to go ... Missed the kickstarter it seems. Wonder why they got a 50 and 55 package, didn't see much of a diff ? I'll see if it's on at the end of Oct again then.
Update: You can now pledge outside of the closed kickstarter for different tier levels. Camelot Unchained is a niche RvR game in production by Mark Jacob and his team known as City State Entertainment. Anyone who enjoys open world PvP should give this game a look. A few Xen members have already pledge during the kickstarter and we have a small user group. Internal testing starts next week while alpha is scheduled for Q4 2014. Exciting stuff. http://camelotunchained.com/en/builders-tiers/ Edit: I'll build a new thread for this game next week. Still many months before any of us get to touch it since I don't think anyone picked up internal testing.
