If you're using the retail box CPU (which I'm assuming you are since there's no cooling mentioned) the heat sync that comes with it typically has a thermal applied to it already.

You'll like the Black series HDD much more than the blue I think that is a good upgrade, be sure to get the drivers for it though before you install. 640GB will be enough for a while provided you don't get to crazy with downloaded media.

I can't speak to the RAM as I have no experience with Patriot. How much is the pack costing you?

Video card will be good enough for what you want to do with it for quite some time. The HD option will make it a good filler for a future back-up or HTPC when this box gets retired.

Monitor, you can't go wrong with Samsung, I'd do 24 inch but I'm spoiled. :)

PSU will be great, you should have more than enough power to do a bit of OC'ing on your CPU as well.

What about a case and mouse?

the CPU does come with a fan

Ive been using an 80 gig so 640 will be more than enough

I already have a mouse. Was looking at the APEX Vortex 3620 SGCC / ABS ATX Mid Tower. just something cheep to get the job done.

The patriot ram cost 70 bucks after rebates. Most other options were 100 and patriot has a good rep. lifetime warranty so cant really go wrong.

Unfortunately Im used to 1920/1200 res so anything under 300 bucks will be sightly worse than im used to.

I know you don't believe me, but I can't be the only Xoobie that uses the Dell Outlet store, their monitors are fantastic, I've had my 2 for 5 years now. You can usually get some amazing deals on there.

You are ignoring clock vs clock efficiency.

    3ghz phenom 2 > 3ghz athlon x2

$/GB is secondary. First you determine your minimum requirements. Maybe you find someone selling an 8GB drive for $0.03? A bit too small for a modern os. I'd say 250 is minimum for games, os, some movies, music, apps, free space. 32gb ssd for os only. 64gb if you want a few games and some apps.

dell is fine. do yourself a favour though and get a GOOD monitor. It's the one thing you aren't likely to replace/upgrade. and it's what you spend all your time looking at. 22" min imo.

yes. it was on sale. also happened to be the last cpu that was 100% trouble free install. the 965 has issues with my mb and required some hacking.

good. i use patriot ram. you can easily find them posting on many forums so if you ever have trouble they offer good support. i got my 4gb for 40$ after rebates. dont spend more than 20$ on a keyboard. 5750 is good.

make sure you find out what cables and such come with it. worst thing is to get it and be missing a cable(usually monitors come vga only, rarely have hdmi cables). Don't spend more than 10$ on an hdmi or you are getting ripped off.

i know i know zomg over 9000 posts in a row but i cant get multi quote to work. and there were alot of posts :\

you didnt link the new ones so my only questions are about the mb. usb 3.0? what audio codec?

actually, how many fans are in the case? what is their noise level in dB? and cfm?

I used these but you are probably fine as long as your case uses all the slots for fans and has equal intake and exhaust. I use front to back airflow but i doubt it will matter as much for your system since i use 2 vid cards and you only have 1. These ones are dead silent though. kept my old 6000 at 25c, with the help of a massive heatsink, when oc'd.

also, i thought you got kicked off the computer!???!!

I guess I'd make the assumption people know what their minimum requirements are if they're putting together their own box. And if he's been running 5 years on 80gb a 120 would be more than sufficient.

But that actually caused me to think up another question. If you've been using the same laptop for so long, what OS are you planning on installing on this system or do you even have an OS to install, otherwise you'll need to put that into your pricing scheme as well.

    -Point taken

i got my 4gb for 40$ after rebates. - Fuck you, where
dont spend more than 20$ on a keyboard.- Logitech Deluxe 250 $20
    5750 is good. - figured

make sure you find out what cables and such come with it.- done
Don't spend more than 10$ on an hdmi - i got you

you didnt link the new ones so my only questions are about the mb. usb 3.0? - There arent any AM2+/AM3 MBs that have usb 3. so uness i up to a 955 be i cant get usb 3 without upgradeing the board too.
what audio codec? - MotherBoard 8 channel Realtek ALC889A

actually, how many fans are in the case? what is their noise level in dB? and cfm? Case i was looking at 1 front and 1 rear 120 fans. specs? no idea, looks like a maxcube fan. not really interested in the led but w/e

I used these - I may use them if i need some extra

also, i thought you got kicked off the computer!???!! - I did, im switching between my old artifacting one (can only see half the screen and my l key is semi busted) and one downstairs which is usable by anyone in the complex, its an emachine.

1 in the same if it's an UltraSharp - good to know

what OS are you planning on installing on this system - im running windows 7 and im getting a 64 bit version for the computer. I got free software from college.

Ill look into the case. and another monitor

Thoughts on open box monitors? and ASUS

If the warranty transfers on open box / refurb monitors then you're not losing out.

good price for that monitor size. and if you heard reignier bitch about his hd space like i have you wouldnt say 120gb is sufficient. os alone is 20gb, a game these days will run you like 15gb+, you leave like 20-25% free and you barely have room left.

you wouldnt need to upgrade to the 955, all am sockets are backwards compatible.

but really dont worry about usb3.0 that much, you can get an add in card later if you really need it. really small issue if on a budget.

So i think i forgot to add in the cost of the case last time.

Anyway im looking at this monitor
ASUS VH242H Black 23.6" 5ms HDMI Full 1080P Widescreen LCD Monitor

Total is 835 all said and done.

Only AM3 boards have usb 3. And only AM3 socket processors fit into AM2+ boards not AM2+ Processors into AM3 Boards

i s there a place to download windows os's. I have the serial code for it just dont have the cd with the actual os on it.

Also, Akuma just knocked the ati, comments? It looked like the 5750 was the best power for price
