I have often wondered when on forums and in game where people have gotten their name, or what it means. So, post it here. No further explanation needed :p

My username, Brown McCoy, is very random. It was my grade 7 art class, and for some strange reason, some guys thought it would be fun to call me brown mccoy. At the time, it irritated me, so they kept doing it. Eventually it became my email address, and then my online alias for everything. The Brown part is my last name, and they don't even know where the McCoy part came from.

    My WoW Characters:
Steropes (warrior): One of the three cyclops in Greek mythology. Thanks to Grizlack, this was later morphed to Stereo Herpes, later shortened to Herpes, then to Herps. And by later, I mean within 2 days of transferring my warrior back...
Clavit (priest): 100% random name that I thought sounded fine.
Aesar (druid): Formerly a druidic god, which was brought into Roman mythology later on. Not much is known about Aesar. He is rumored to be the ancient creator god, or god of Fire and Inteligence in Celtic mythology. He may have been a druid deity, and possible god of destruction (this is what I based the name off of). The god is more commonly now as Aesus.
Melinoe (Death Knight, not level capped, but has a decent name): The greek goddess of ghosts.

    CoD4 names:
    ({x}) Brown - Take a guess
({x}) Banana - Your guess is as good as mine. Brown banana = gross.
({x}) Jesus - You have been killed by Jesus! Air strike called in by Jesus! Nuff said.

    Keep the thread going :p

I started off with the name Randal Rasandil here. Needed the 2 names for Guild wars. . .

Changed to Harlequin once I was at home here on the forums (although i wish i had picked something a little less popular! Trying to grab Harlequin as an IGN can be tough!)

Other IGNs I've used are generally game dependent or class dependent.

I usually call my healers Popavalium. . . in WAR I had fun with the goblin names like Danglywotnots and Upstixanrun. . .

If I can't grab Harlequin in Aion, I may return to my GW roots and resurrect Rasandil.

In short, there is no method to my madness.

My very first MMO char was called Tamboura, she was a priestess and became the oldest char in the game, quite famous in the ol'days.

The tamboura is India's ancient stringed instrument. Its resonant, hypnotic quality is one of the most distinctive features of indian classical music. It was also used by the Beatles and used in some of their best albums.

If a yogi listens with undivided attention to the sounds
of stringed instruments where resonance is prolonged,
he will finally be absorbed in the space of Consciousness
and will attain the state of the Self.

    - Vijnana Bhairava

The sound of the tamboura resonates with the primordial sound "OM" from which all melodies arise and into which they subside. Accompanied by the tamboura, melodies no longer sound like separate notes, but blend together into an ocean of sound that quiets the mind and soothes the heart.

So this was a good name for a priest at the time, and still is ;)

I have been called Tamboura for over 12 years now, so that I am even in RL responding to it :)

Blasphemy is just something I thought up when I made a Spiritualist in RFo. My first mmo was SWG and my main was Bastal Ruul, alt was Zenruul. I wanted Bounty Hunter type names.

Other names: Heartseeker Bloodfinder (EQ2) , Xionuul Soulstealer (Guild Wars), Blasfamous/Wraithlock/Scourn (WoW), Crushgroove Lesmoothe (WAR)

I started with RFO in 2006 i believe, back then i called my accretian striker "steelranger" (WOW! how original!) Anyways i got bored when i got to lvl 35 or so and i quit for a few years. When i found out it was f2p i started again but i didnt really like my old ign but i couldnt think of anything good. Then one day while lvling this guy calls me "eelstranger" and WHAM! i was renamed. And from that day on i was known as eel and there was finally world peace.

M first name in an MMO was taken from the sound ny infant son would make when I played with him, Bouchawoo. After taking the merciless pummeling abuse from other players on it I swore my next name would be short, cool sounding and onomatopoeiac, so I played Zim, a heavily roleplayed Empath class in Gemstome III who was dumb (couldn't speak) and couldn't ask for help with his own injuries. I got a lot of praise for doing that, especially from the elders in the game as it was never done before.

Then the next step from Zim was Zed. I had no idea at the time that it was what some english speaking folks called the letter Z, it also was before the time of the movie Pulp Fiction and before Power Rangers, the two comments I hear the most about it. Zed has now even become my "stage name" during music performances, and I record under the name as well.

My gamemaster name when I worked in the business was Nimbus, and since it was taken before I got a chance to take it in Aion I chose Cumulus instead. Different cloud formation, same idea.

I loves me my Zed and I can only hope it will be free upon OB.

    EDIT:
I chose FriendlyFire back in the Quake3 days playing Urban Terror. It was the first game I played that had FriendlyFire_on. I think I joined one server 3 times with a diffrent IGN and procceded to kill everything in sight. I think I was banned from that server. Since then:

I chose FriendlyFire in Planetside and have since killed many a teammate.

Simple for me picked Azphel because he is an Empyrean Lord of Shadow in Aion and i think it would be good to have my forum, ign as him in Aion and everywhere on the Internet.

Im gonna have to be on the spot in terms of the start time for Pre-selction if i dont i have a feeling my name will be taken as it is to do with Aion anyway and when people can think of names they look at people from the games lore for names to use.

  17. Since my very first game I've ever played I've had the name Blakkmantis.

I wanted something different that sounded kinda cool, and also would be easily remembered by my foes, lol. I love the color black, and always liked the insect the Preying Mantis. So after twisting the spelling of Black to Blakk (just to be different) adding mantis, walla my namesake!

Over the years I've made other toons, and my most notable ones are Dirk Massive (from Eve Online) and Bolvork (from EQ2) Look for me to eventually make toons with those named sometime in the future also. ;):D:p

He composed the score for Blade Runner, nuff said . . . but here's the wiki on the origins of the Vanger's name:

Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou (born March 29, 1943) (Greek: Ευάγγελος Οδυσσέας Παπαθανασίου IPA: [evˈaɲɟelos oðiˈseas papaθanaˈsiu]), is a Greek composer of electronic, progressive, ambient and orchestral music, under the artist name Vangelis (a diminutive of Evangelos; pronounced /vænˈɡɛlɨs/ in English). He is best known for his Academy Award winning score for the film Chariots of Fire, and scores for the films Blade Runner and 1492: Conquest of Paradise.

Vangelis began his professional musical career working with several popular bands of the 1960s such as The Formynx and Aphrodite's Child, with the latter's album 666 going on to be recognized as a psychedelic "classic".[2] In the 1970s, Vangelis formed a musical partnership with Jon Anderson, the lead singer of progressive rock band Yes, and the duo went on to release several albums together under the alias Jon & Vangelis. Towards the end of the 1970s, Vangelis composed music scores for several animal documentaries, including Opéra sauvage, the success of these scores moved Vangelis into the eyes of well known filmmakers. In 1981, he composed the score for the Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire. The soundtrack's single, "Titles", won Vangelis the Academy Award for Best Original Music Score and also reached the top of the American Billboard.

In a career spanning over 47 years, writing and composing more than 40 albums, Vangelis is generally regarded by music critics as one of the greatest composers of electronic music of all time.

Mardok - will be my alts name and created on day one so it doesn't get taken; will be a sorc. I've used this name in D&D since 5th grade circa 1985. He eventually became my main NPC (think Sauron) when I embraced the role of DM in high school (Mees Geeksa) The name came from an altered spelling on the Sumerian God, Marduk out of Deities and Demigods. In Sumerian myth, Mardok slayed Tiamat (D&D Cartoon ne1???) which is considered their creation story.

    Official Wiki:

Marduk's original character is obscure but he was later on connected with water, vegetation, judgment, and magic.[2] He was also regarded as the son of Ea (Sumerian Enki) and Damkina and the heir of Anu, but whatever special traits Marduk may have had were overshadowed by the political development through which the Euphrates valley passed and which led to imbuing him with traits belonging to gods who at an earlier period were recognized as the heads of the pantheon. There are particularly two gods—Ea and Enlil—whose powers and attributes pass over to Marduk. In the case of Ea, the transfer proceeded pacifically and without effacing the older god. Marduk took over the identity of Asarluhi, the son of Ea and god of magic, so that Marduk was integrated in the pantheon of Eridu where both Ea and Asarluhi originally came from. Father Ea voluntarily recognized the superiority of the son and hands over to him the control of humanity. This association of Marduk and Ea, while indicating primarily the passing of the supremacy once enjoyed by Eridu to Babylon as a religious and political centre, may also reflect an early dependence of Babylon upon Eridu, not necessarily of a political character but, in view of the spread of culture in the Euphrates valley from the south to the north, the recognition of Eridu as the older centre on the part of the younger one.

While the relationship between Ea and Marduk is marked by harmony and an amicable abdication on the part of the father in favour of his son, Marduk's absorption of the power and prerogatives of Enlil of Nippur was at the expense of the latter's prestige. After the days of Hammurabi, the cult of Marduk eclipsed that of Enlil; although Nippur and the cult of Enlil enjoyed a period of renaissance during the four centuries of Kassite control in Babylonia (c. 1570 BC–1157 BC), the definite and permanent triumph of Marduk over Enlil became felt within the Babylonian empire. The only serious rival to Marduk after ca. 1000 BC was Aššur in Assyria. In the south, Marduk reigned supreme. He is normally referred to as Bel "Lord", also bel rabim "great lord", bêl bêlim "lord of lords", ab-kal ilâni bêl terêti "leader of the gods", aklu bêl terieti "the wise, lord of oracles", muballit mîte "reviver of the dead", etc.

When Babylon became the capital of Mesopotamia, the patron deity of Babylon was elevated to the level of supreme god. In order to explain how Marduk seized power, Enûma Elish was written, which tells the story of Marduk's birth, heroic deeds and becoming the ruler of the gods. This can be viewed as a form of Mesopotamian apologetics. Also included in this document are the fifty names of Marduk.

In Enûma Elish, a civil war between the gods was growing to a climactic battle. The Anunnaki gods gathered together to find one god who could defeat the gods rising against them. Marduk, a very young god, answered the call and was promised the position of head god.

To prepare for battle, he makes a bow, fletches arrows, grabs a mace, throws lightning before him, fills his body with flame, makes a net to encircle Tiamat within it, gathers the four winds so that no part of her could escape, creates seven nasty new winds such as the whirlwind and tornado, and raises up his mightiest weapon, the rain-flood. Then he sets out for battle, mounting his storm-chariot drawn by four horses with poison in their mouths. In his lips he holds a spell and in one hand he grasps a herb to counter poison.

First, he challenges the leader of the Anunnaki gods, the dragon of the primordial sea Tiamat, to single combat and defeats her by trapping her with his net, blowing her up with his winds, and piercing her belly with an arrow.

Then, he proceeds to defeat Kingu, who Tiamat put in charge of the army and wore the Tablets of Destiny on his breast, and "wrested from him the Tablets of Destiny, wrongfully his" and assumed his new position. Under his reign humans were created to bear the burdens of life so the gods could be at leisure.

Marduk was depicted as a human, often with his symbol the snake-dragon which he had taken over from the god Tishpak. Another symbol that stood for Marduk was the spade.

People were named after Marduk. For example, some scholars speculate that the Biblical character of Mordechai (Book of Esther) used this Persian name to replace his original Hebrew name, Bilshan.

Babylonian texts talk of the creation of Eridu by the god Marduk as the first city, "the holy city, the dwelling of their [the other gods] delight".

Nabu, god of wisdom, is a son of Marduk.

It can also be said that there are similarities between the stories of Marduk in Enûma Elish and the story of creation according to Genesis
