Not sure what to do, a few people telling me different things. 2x 250GB OCZ SATA300 Solid Series Solid State Drive in RAID0. or 2x 300GB VelociRaptor in RAID0. I know that Raptors are very stable and very fast in RAID, unsure about the SSD drives as I've never used em, anyone know?
If they're the same price, I'd go for the SSD's regardless of performance. Raptors are loud and annoying.
SSD's are a lot more expensive. And the Raptors I have in my machine are quiet and never gone down on me.
I have 1 VelociRaptor and it's loud and annoying. I once had 4 Raptors and it was unbearable. I'm outgrowing 150GB, so I'll probably stick in a cheap 500GB.
never heard of the first, stick with what you KNOW to be good IMO, unless there are some sick reviews for it.
Spoke to someone in sales at scan and they said they're going to be getting the newer OCZ Vertex Series SSDs, they're a little more expensive (£735.99 each for the 250GB), but definitely worth it, they read up to 250mb/s, write up to 160mb/s and have a access time of less than 1ms. Decided I'm gonna roll with 2 of them.
736 for a 250 gig hard drive ... that is just ummmm stupid unless you didnt type the price in correct or something
I know of solid state drives, but have not heard of the OCZ ones, versus all the things I have heard of raptor drives. well if you have the money its fine, but I will say that unless you have a good HD your gimping your computer. also 736 is in euros...probably a lot more in US currency I imagine. I wouldn't pay for those, given the advancement of technology, but...if you have the money...
ya im fine with my sata drives i have and its even more expensive cuz its a british pound not even a euro all that for what like 2ms quicker loading of a map? i dunno if you have the money go for it haha or send me some money
Works out at about $2,200 for a pair of em, quite expensive but definitely worth it. Raptor - Reads up to 140mb/s, writes up to 140mb/s and has a 4.2MS access time. OCZ Vertex - Reads up to 200mb/s, writes up to 160mb/s and has a less than 1MS access time. Combined with RAID and the results are astonishing.
What is all this talk about Raptors being loud? I don't even hear mine, and its mounted in an Iceybox in one of the cd drive bays (aka closer to me and less sound barrier...ish)
The only problem I've heard with SSD's is that they can become subject to stuttering. When they get too many read/write commands coming at them, their controller chips start to freak out and can't decide what to do (stuttering). Intel makes a new SSD with an improved controller chip that fixes the problem, but it is like $700 for 20gb or something. Every other SSD uses either 1 or 2 J-micron controllers (the ones subject to stuttering). The good SSDs use two of those controllers to limit the amount of stuttering. If you want a cost effective solution, use a single SSD for loading your OS and games; and use this for general storage. Many people tend to do that now.
