Wait for the 79xx cards to come out if you can. Buy a 6850/460/560 if you really need something right now. They can be had for 150 on a regular basis. Well that is if you don't mind spending 150 on a throwaway card.

But that card you picked will run anything you can throw at it that's out right now provided your not running some insane resolution.

Not bad for a mid end but as stated in this thread the new series of their cards are coming out soon so buying one of these will lead to needing to replace your card much earlier than if you wait a few months.

edit: Still not a bad card by any standard.

Ya I'm running a Zotac GTX 560 with everything maxed and running fine but I'm also only on a 720p TV so that may change at a higher res.

Running a pair of 580s in SLI here but I really dont think thats the price range you're going for. That being said it's about as close to graphics card jesus you can get right now without dropping 12 grand.

Doesn't really matter. Any card will run fine on either a Intel or AMD platform. All that crap about cards running better on specific mb/cpu is just marketing bullshit. You just want a balanced system either way. You buy a top of the line card you want a top of the line cpu/mb/ram/power ect. ect. to go with it otherwise you wasted money on a part you will never put to full use.

Buying video cards these days is more about paring it with your monitor's resolution than anything.

I am running an AMD processor with my pair of 580s on an AMD board. So there is no problem mix and matching. Your computers not going to turn on and give you the finger for mixing brands.

Although that would be pretty funny

I can vouch for it working fine, as well. You know, its fascinating how widespread this misconception is...

I seem to remember reading that you could buy a 6950 and unlock it so its basically the same as that 6970 you posted... Might be worth looking at as it will be a bit cheaper that way.

Pretty sure every 6950 can't be reflashed anymore as they closed up that hole.

I'd be waiting a couple weeks for the 7000 cards if you can.

I have a 6970, its a decent card but has a hard time about 10% of the time handling areas of SWTOR, and can't handle any forced Anti-aliasing at all. Running at 2560x1600. If you are running 1920x1080 or something lower it should eat up most anything up.

The 7950 is suppose to be on par with a 6970 for performance and be about the same price, and if you want to spend around the $500 mark the 7970 is about 30% more performance - both cards on the verge of release.

Yep the ability to flash a 6950 to a 6970 was closed up a little while back :(

And the 7970 is actually launching at $650 last I heard  So I already know Mebard wont be able to swing that.

Truer words were never spoken. My resolution is 1680x1050 and my Radeon HD 5770 still runs well enough.

I would like to get another monitor though eventually and a better video card, but I'm in no rush. I'm especially not dropping 500+ on a video card. That's just not happening. :p

Very true. Picking your monitor will also set the bar for what you can upgrade too as well. I know for me, a monitor can last 2 generations of computers. If you want to run a high resolution now, be prepared to eat the cost of another high end GPU next time you upgrade in a few years as the new games will need more hardware to support that resolution. My previous lcd was 1920x1200 and that is still considered on the high end of resolutions 6 years later, I am sure 2560x1600 will have a long shelf life.

If you want to get into Eyefinity, Surround or 3D, that factors heavily into the equation - once again though, selecting your display choice first and pairing a GPU to go with it.

Ya I have a dual monitor setup and when I tried to play things with a single 580 at 1920x2400 I had a bit of slowdown so I popped in a second one and haven't looked back. I might be misrepresenting the resolution but I *think* that's the right way to express a pair of 1920x1200 monitors.
