Hi guys I recently puchased the silverstone FT01 case, and I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good MOBO. I do not want to break the bank, but I need something that propel me through the SWTOR world with decent frames. I know frames depends on video and ram, but it all starts with the MOBO Gru
What CPU and GPU are you going to use? I myself just picked up a 2500k with the Asus Sabertooth p67 Mobo ... It is a really awesome MOBO and has a ton of OC potential and keeps everything cool ... I also picked up a hyper 212+ cooler for the CPU and right now at load in a game im only hitting maybe 42c
I want to use an intel chip and most likely Geforce ... but I am open to going back to Radeon Please advise
If you get a new MB you also need a new CPU at the same time. So it really depends on what "not break the bank" means for you. And if you need RAM included with the MB or not. Do you already have some sticks of DDR3? Also, at this point you aren't going to want any P67 based boards. Or H67. The new and slightly better Z68 launches in 6 days.
True... I guess it all depends on how well the onboard gpu in the 2500/2600k can run SWTOR... or are you talking about price drops for P67 when Z68 comes out? Other than that, really don't see much of a benefit of the Z68, unless the SSD caching plays a significant role in improving your SSD performance.
Just cause Z68 comes with the ability to use the onboard GPU inside the processor doesnt mean you have to use it. Z68 combines the overclocking ability of P67, with the onboard video of H67, plus adds overclocking of the built in GPU, and adds SSD caching. As well as support for drives larger than 2.2TB in a RAID array. Plus if you get an MSI Z68 based board you can use the Ludic Virtu software to actively switch between onboard GPU and dedicated GPU. Thus saving power when not playing games, and having graphics potential while you play. Dont know how well it will work though, just have to wait and see.
i cant really see any reason to not get a p67 mobo / i5 2500k ... hell i just did it tuesday ... i cant see any real benifit with the z68 right now
Yes, I am going from scratch .. Will need ram.board.vid.power using Fortress FT01 case from silverstone .. but I am concerned about buying ASUS again ... my current mobo is a p5n32 sli premium and no ram works in it except Crucial. It was the most unhappy board I have ever used. Gru
It is probably more the type of RAM chips than the manufacturer. I cant recall what chip it is off the top of my head, but modern boards have having some issues with one of them again too. If you use some G.Skill RAM you should be fine, most of their stuff is compatible with all Intel products. If you get RAM that says it was designed for the processor you are using, it works really well. If you get RAM that says it was designed for some other processor than what you are using, then normally you have to run it slower than its advertised speed grade or at looser timings. For me, Gigabyte has always had more memory incompatibility problems than Asus. But thats just my experience. ALSO, you still havent said a price limit. I dont know what breaking the bank means to you. For me that means something under a few grand, for some it means under $500. I really dont know what to think of for your number.
I am liking the sabertooth, but around 600$ budget for board ram and power video is a whole other budget
Here is what I would go with if you want massive processing power and RAM, and dont care about running two big graphics cards. Although, you probably *could* get crossfire working anyway if you really wanted: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131670 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819105275 (two of them) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835114113 (two of them) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231440 (four of them) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231402 (if the above is sold out) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151100 Subtotal: $1,325 Lets summarize: 12 processing cores at 2.6GHz each 32GB of RAM at fast enough speed for anything you throw at it extra virtual machine hardware processing lost of hard drive ports and the other usual stuff found on the MB or if you want something cheaper: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130574 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115070 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231431 (two sets) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608018 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151100 Subtotal: $810 Summary: 4 processing cores, 4 extra processing threads (partial cores) 16GB of RAM a 2 SATA6 ports (and another 2 that suck and shouldnt be used) a pair of USB3 ports and all the other usual stuff EDIT: doh, was already copying links while you were posting. You can always drop 8GB of RAM on the second setup and be closer to budget. Or drop to a normal 2600 and dont buy the heatsink. That will save another $90, but you will be unable to overclock.
Enigma is very very good with tech stuff hence his title I am in LOVE with the sabertooth board i have right now My specs are listed in my sig and i have no issues with any game right now ... and i am just gonna upgrade the GFX here in a few weeks or days who knows when i can sell my radar detector haha Both those builds will be amazing!!!
Erock what do you have your 2500k OC'ed to? and how's the temp? Thinking of getting the Hyper 212 myself... and maybe try for a 4.8-5.0 on a 2600k.
I havnt actually started OC yet ... I am running 26 idle - 28 - 32 itunes internet and playing WOT i have hit 45 so far So things are running great with the push pull config on the 212 and exhaust fan right next too it pulling it straight out I figure i can get 4.2 easy and get a 4.5 steady if i really work on it ... my goal is 4.2 steady i dont need to OC much more then that TBH My buddy has a 2600k at 5ghz stable right now ... i can ask him for the info if you want
Very unlikely, Sorry. Sandy Bridge processors on average can only do 4.5GHz stable. Erock seems to have a nice one so far judging by his temperatures, he may be able to hit 5GHz with some work. Which leads me to... What voltage is he using? Most of the people you see on the internet advertising they have a SB running 5GHz stable are not really doing so. 90% of the people I have seen at that speed are over the maximum 24/7 voltage limit and are killing their CPU. Or their heat limit and are killing the CPU. Not saying your friend has to be doing it wrong, his odds are much better if he is running on water or phase change, or he could have a very lucky CPU. Just wondering though what his 100% load temps are when using Windows 7 SP1 running Prime95 small FFT for an hour. Also what is his voltage at, and load-line calibration? I can hit 5GHz too if I want and run stable. To do so however would require I push 1.5v and go back to my loud fans. I also hit 87 degrees doing so, which is just a bit over the thermal threshold I think. So for me to run nstable at 5GHz is actually damaging to CPU even though it is stable. And thanks for mentioning my title, made me go and look and see that my title has disappeared once again actually...
That would be awesome, could you check with him what voltage and what cooler he's using? Thanks! Yea... what was the rule of thumb? 50% reach 4.5 and only about 10% reach 5.0. I know a guy that ran his 2600k 5.7 @1.6v... sure enough he smoked it in 1-2 month, and that's on water too... lol...
