Recently being extremely bored this summer I downed a few series in less then a week so I thought I might toss out a recommendation or two. Note that all of these are viewable through Animefreak.tv all of these are currently around 25 episodes or less making them nice end of the summer watches.

    1. Wolf's Rain, very interesting story, nice art, and respectably sad ending.

    2. Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom, pretty awesome, reminds me of the Bourne series without Matt Damon's big head taking up half the screen. Personally my favorite this summer.

    3. Angel Beats (not really lesser known about but should be watched none the less) very entertaining, only 13 episodes.

    4. Tengentoppen Gurren Lagann, Watched this one last summer actually but was good none the less. A must see.

    5. History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi is one of my favorite long running manga's but only 50 episodes of it's anime exist... which is unfortunate but worth checking out.

If anyone else has any recommendations toss em up! There's still a bit left of summer!

Hm, you didn't mention that Wolf's Rain has a soundtrack by Yoko Kanno. :) Not sure how many people watch series for the music though.

Not much of what I do/have watched is that obscure, though there was The Twelve Kingdoms, which is an interesting take on supernatural/fantasy anime (though it originated from books if I recall). Bit longer, 45 episodes total, and even then they left some loose threads. There's a lot more politics/drama and a lot less fighting than usual - though it is still there. After Naruto and Bleach - which I do still like, don't get me wrong - it was nice to see that not all series are like that.

I've been watching Ergo Proxy. It's pretty terrible as the plot is like a broken record which skips every 2 seconds.
