San Antonio just got groovier.

Members of Grove Movement gathered Friday October 10 at Luna Fine Music Club on San Pedro to celebrate the release of their new album “by Definition.”

The band, founded by Danny Gallegos, Frank Pena and UIW alumni Matt Wolff has been making San Antonians want to dance since 2001.

Groove Movement gained vocals and a second percussionist with the addition of Desmond Fahie and music therapy student Jordan Slaughter in 2006. The band has been in its current state of funk since the addition of its newest member, alumni Tiffany Cristo, who adds her sweet, soulful voice to that of lead vocalist Fahie.

The band’s fans and families packed Luna to the point of a line outside filled with fans awaiting the musicians inside. Indoors, it was an atmosphere of pure energy, people moving, dancing even as they mingled, cocktail waitresses gliding through the crowd, not immune to the hip-shaking beats.

The music itself is hard to describe, a mix of very danceable drums, melodic guitar and lyrics that seem to drive the beats, rather than be driven. The effect is a funky, groovy mix of soul, jazz, hip-hop and San Antonio flavor that lifts the spirit and makes bad moods an impossibility.
