My internet is cable, which is all that is available here right now. It isnt THAT bad since download is 100mb/s, but the upload sucks as is the norm with cable. Anyway, I started using a new VPN today and for some reason I can now consistently get higher than my normal upload speed. I am, supposed to have 100mb/5mb speeds, usually I only get 3-4mb upload though. Now I can test and get anywhere from 7-10mb on the upload. How is it possible to get higher than the max allowed speed? Could this be some "fluke" on speed tests that happen on a regular basis?

EDIT: and this last test I just did hit 11mb/s upload speed.

    :| wtf

onyl thing i can think of is weird variation that you just happen to get better speeds when you were on the VPN, otherwise, its possible that they are traffic shaping/sniffing standard traffic and are ignoring the VPN traffic and they just have it tweaked to hit the right speeds normally? i dunno im kind of stretching...

Its called speed boost. Only happens for like a min and then your speeds drop back to normal.
On my 28mbit cable with docsis 3.0 modem and bonding, on speedtest i get 38mb.
Unless you can get 10mbit constant speed, then its probably your provider doing upstream speed testing.

my first thought was the same as Bishop... however unlikely, its the simplest conclusion without more information.
On Doxy's point, however, you should try doing a large file transfer on you vpn. See what happens to prove/disprove that hypothesis. In any case, cool problem! right? ahh shit my uploads are too quick argh!!

bummer. Im rocking around 11 myself. Its enough to host a webserver and plex so I can have all my media and stuff anywhere. I couldnt go back to not having it.

I am trying out TorGuard right now. their servers are pretty decent but I am having a few strange problems every once in a while where all TCP traffic no longer works. If I cant get that sorted out in a couple days I am going to cancel with them and go someplace else. It seems there really arent any good VPN services out there that dont have problems of one sort or another. Too bad bandwidth is such an expensive thing in datacenters, otherwise I would just start my own offshore company and put a server in a couple datacenters and just host my own VPN company for person use between myself and my friends.

Does anyone have any recommendations on where I can upload a large file that would give a speed counter? I have Dropbox, MediaFire, and Netload account, but all those places use all the latest website tech and just have java based uploaders that dont show anything but progress complete. I suppose I could get a good enough number by just dividing the total file size by the time it takes to upload. But then I have to do math and stuff and thats just too much work.
