30 minutes ago..it was a nice long one too..felt it push upwards..I got up to walk where my gf is. It started shaking side to side really good about then. House creaked and me a the GF waited..if a stronger jolt came..we would have been out the door!

Well at least your not in cali scientist all ready know that place is going to slide off into the Pacific eventually (some people hope sooner rather then later ::x:).

I myself view anybody living there or Tornado Vally or any other place they know is a disaster area waiting to happen as natural selection at work. :punch:

The California fault is a lateral / subduction fault, so it's never going to pull away from mainland US.

Yea oklahoma had a series of em a couple(?) weeks ago. first time I've ever felt an earthquake and we are on the 3rd story of an apartment building. I think it was a 5.7 too but we were 50 miles away.

    It's crazy stuff.

My first thought was that CRCH got hit again. This 5.7 was how that CRCH earthquake felt here in wellington.

a 7.1 a last September just 400km from me killed 180 people..Christchurch the second largest city in New Zealand is still trying to recover. Thousands of homes people cant go back too. The Central Business District is still mostly closed off.

and I do live right directly on top of a MAJOR! fault line....New Zealand was created by fault lines and Volcanoes.

Its fascinating, the beauty in all these scars. The beauty in destruction.

Just goes to show nature doesn't give a shit if we are here or not. We may be speeding up global warming but it doesn't mean earth gives a shit. It'll still be here afterward.

The parts of the country living on volcanoes are lucky - they don't blow up nearly as often.

Of course, when they do, no amount of good engineering is going to save the buildings.

First i've heard about that. I'm in the middle of applying for citizenship via decent over there and applying for jobs. One on Fox Glacier and one at Whakatane, Bay of Plenty. Just seems to be a lot of stuff happening over there recently :/ Still not going to put me off getting out of the UK if I can though!

We get minor earthquakes all the time, particularly through the mountain ranges. Most of the big ones are in sparsely populated areas, mainly Fiordland and the ocean trenches to the north and south.

Its a great place to live and raise kids.

I hope you get the job at the glacier..very secluded area..but gorgeous. fantastic. amazing. One of my fav spots in NZ

on a side note..CNN just today rated New Zealand the least corrupt place in the world.

I came over 10 years ago with the family and spent 4 weeks touring round from Auckland down to Dunedin down the east and then back up the west coast. Haven't been to Fox Glacier but went up to the face of Franz Josef, like you say it really is just a stunning area to live in - if a little remote. Its just a great place to be in :D

Just want to get out of the UK now since young peoples unemployment (18-25) has gone over 25% along with the rising costs of living/taxes etc. Always said I would move to NZ at some point and now is probably a good time to do so :) Of course that all depends on getting citizenship but as far as I can see it wont be a problem since my dad was born there and still holds a NZ passport :)

Youth unemployment is almost the same here. 20% I think.
