So, I've had my new laptop for about two weeks, and I've put maybe 20+ hours in on it and thus far I'm really happy with it. I will more than likely upgrade the 2nd hard disk to an SSD when I have some down time but as I'm traveling every week right now that really isn't an option. Anyhow, if you're in the market, it's $1500 and I am very pleased with it. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6701575&CatId=4938 It doesn't have the problems it's predecessor was known for which is the main reason as to why I went with it. I am quite impressed at how cool it stays. Yes the battery life sucks when gaming but that's to be expected. Plenty of comments on it at notebookreview.com as well.
Not to bad at all its at a good price point for a entry lvl gamer. IMO though gaming on a laptop sucks compared to a desktop system.
My first laptop was one of Gateway's FX line, back in 2008 they went on sale for around $1200 and I grabbed one. Core 2 Duo, 8800M GTS, it was awesome for what I needed it for (Aion). Now it sits unloved in a corner of my room. You outgrow laptops quickly, I found. What I really wanted was a smaller laptop that could take all kinds of shit I threw at it and just keep trucking, which turned out to be a Dell business laptop. That's what I took to PAX and dumped my video files on every night. As for my gaming rig, that's an i7 beast. But anyhow, back to the issue at hand: yeah, that laptop looks like a good deal, but in a year or two I bet you'll tire of it's weight and heat and long for something more stable. Nothing personal, that's just normally how things work out. As they say on /g/: "Choose one: laptop or gaming?" Meanwhile, on /v/: "Choose one: free, good, or MMO?"
I don't know if I'd say it's entry level, as for gaming laptops it's quite powerful especially for the price. I do agree with you that laptops aren't as good as desktops but when you travel 5 days a week for work like I do, you do whatever it takes.
I wouldn't plan on keeping it for more than two years, heck I wouldn't keep a desktop for that long. That said, it can be upgraded to 16gigs of Ram and a better processor, 2nd & 3rd HDDs as well. So it isn't like it doesn't have legs if you want to get some life out of it.
Damn, that's pretty nice. My FX could take 4GB (well, 8 if I wanted to pay for it) of ram and one more HDD (I added an Intel Gen 1 SSD to it, but eventually removed and now use it for my i7 as the system boot drive). That reminds me, need a new SSD soon. This one is getting to show it's age.
Well obviously. That's kind of a well-known fact. But just because its not up-to-par as a desktop doesn't mean having the mobility of a laptop that can somewhat run games well is a bad thing. Especially for those who work on the job, or live in hotels, or move a lot - its a great thing.
I have a HP dv9858ca that I have used for gaming for the past 2 years (coming up on 3 in Feb) and it's still holding up to the games that are coming out. The battery life is junk but I'm never anywhere without a plug. I think on performance setting I get 2 hours out of it if I am just browsing the net and watching videos. However, I don't really have the need to play things on max settings so if that were the case it def. wouldn't hold up.
nice laptop Van. very nice for the price - and ASUS is the shit lately. very nice products indeed. I especially like that you can expand so much on your laptop.
