Depends on how much you are spending on that and who the manufacture is (unless you are building it). I'm guessing HP? If you don't mind answering that then I can tell you if this is a good deal or not. I take it will be primarily for gaming? I, personally would dump Vista and stay with XP till the new OS comes out.
HP is crap. All thanks to the pollutant that was Compaq. They used to be a great computer, but I haven't seen a decent HP in years. poor hardware, heinous builds and terrible support (although no where near as bad as Sony ).
Yea it was HP......the quote was like 2800 if my memory serves me right...its been a couple months since i looked at it...I had the specs saved in my email. I was also considering Dell's gaming laptop. Yes the laptop is going to be mostly for gaming (so I dont get in trouble with the girlfriend, it will allow me to sit on the couch and still play warhammer). The only other things I would do would just be simple applications i.e office...excell and anything else my MBA program is going to make me use. So if you were going to by a laptop for mostly gaming and the simple other stuff which would you buy? Expense of say 3 g's or so I also agree with the vista vs xp....the stupid offer wouldnt let me have xp
/agree on Toshiba Regarding Dell: check out their Outlet page...you can get a machine 30% below retail because someone returned it as a gift or as a repair...they have full warrentees and you can get a massive box for a cheaper cost. Precisions - my current favorite laptop period. Excellent lifespan and brutal video cards (meant for 3D rendering and video) XPS - the "gaming" line
thanks for the feed back guys so collectively you guys would go with the Toshiba Satellite x205 - SLi5 over the Dell XPS M1730? isnt the graphic card on the dell better.....so memory (Toshiba) > card (Dell) tried the outlet function on dells site no luck there.....any special sites you guys would recommend looking at that might have the Toshiba or Dell cheaper...I figure buying direct is probably the way to go though thanks again for you help
The reason I say the X205 series is this: I own one, and I bought it while deployed to Iraq. This thing has withstood an amazing amount of punishment. Everything from being taken on Blackhawks, to being carried about 1-2 miles on shit roads in a backpack(See: LOTS of jostling), to withstanding dust storm conditions. Several other soldiers I know have purchased X205 laptops and love them. They play most all games very well. Oh, and the vid cards can be overclocked without overheating the system. The cooling in it is that good.
They are kinda dull headed. I called them once to ask what version of HDMI was installed in my laptop. Instead of giving me an exact version, they gave me a cop out anwser called "The Latest Version". As far as I can tell it's not better then any other large computer company out there. They are somewhat knowledgeable, but don't expect them to know everything about their systems(like they should).
lawls. you're right. as a systems administrator i can attest the the level of script reading/ uselessness of all computer companies base (consumer level) support unless you pay for the higher support. luckily i have a government account with most companies so i get thier tier support whether i am at work or not. Siv: I have heard nothing but good things about Toshiba and good to mildly mixed about XPS. As far as I can see the two laptops are basically equal (the differences between the VGAs are nominal); the Toshiba is approx. a pound lighter, the Dell has better RAM (4GB vs 3GB) and DVD options (DVD vs Blue), but outside of that they are basically equal. which ever you can find for a better deal will keep you happy for 3 years. This is the machine I was recommending more so then the XPS BTW. These boxes are solid and their video cards are top of the line...although check to make certain they would jive with your gaming needs. Like I have said before: I have yet to find a machine better than the Precision line for value, power and longevity.

That is a personal call. I personally think the Dell is mildly better, but, as you see, you pay for it by another $400 which gets you a slightly better LCD, 1GB more RAM, a slightly better video card which may account for the extra cash. The only benefit that the Precision has is reliabilty, a better included warrentee and a video card that is roughly 40-60% faster in every way to the 8800M GT, but again you are paying $300-700 for that bonus. So here is what I would do. If money is even slightly a concern I would go with the Toshiba. If you have cash to throw around but don't want to break the bank go with the XPS. If money is not an issue then buy the Precision. In all cases you will be very happy with any of these computers for the next 3 years and all of them can more than serve your gaming needs. For gaming the only thing that pushes the Dells past the Toshiba is the option for a higher processor, a slightly better LCD, higher video cards and more RAM (which is only useful if you keep Vista) and of which are all the primary ingredients to a happy gamer. The previous were listed in order of difficulty of upgrade, first being most advanced tech skills needed, last being a one armed blind monkey could do it. I can't say which is better for you...that is a personal choice and I don't want to be responsible should anything go south on ya. LOL Read the posted specs on the hardware I linked above and take into consideration the cost differences between them. Most hardware differences between models are in the milliseconds of which only a testing app would notice and not a human eye; so don't fall into the trap of "omg my 1.5GHz machine is soooo much better then the 1.3 GHz machine; good thing I payed $300 more for that 1/100th of a second improvement". the only thing more powerful hardware gets out (outside of being poorer) is you will notice your computers age 6 months later than the lower hardware after 3 or so years. go with what feels good and accept that as soon as you buy it there will already something else out there that is slightly better.
Wanted to thank everyone that helped in my decision I went with a Toshiba X205 should be here in 2 days thanks again
