Hard time selecting OS

Ok so, I build this new gaming PC like a month back and having hard time to decide should I go with windows XP or Vista Ultimate.

Specs look like this:

Gigabyte X48T-DQ6 board
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
Ati Radeon HD4870 X2
G.Skill 4Gb DDR3 1600Mhz , 7-7-7-18

Using Windows XP for now since It's been working for me but dunno, maybe Vista could get more out of this ?

 

You'd be set for Vista. Once you reach a certain level of hardware awesomeness, it's just a matter of preference.

 

I use XP on an older machine and a laptop I use for gaming, and I use Vista on my newer gaming machine. I like Vista more right now, but both seem to work well enough. I think with your rig I would go with Vista though.

 

You need Vista to run DirectX 10 games in DirectX 10.

I hope you're using 64bit version also so that you can utilize all of that RAM.

 

I went to Vista on my new i7 rig. Since the hardware is such a huge jump from my old XP machine, I can't really tell you what difference the OS has made. However, I can say that it has been solid for me so far.

Since you are running 4 GB of RAM and an X2, Vista 64 is the way to go. That and if you have any DX10 games you may see some improvements.

you actually might get better gaming performance with Vista Standard instead of either of the business versions (1 of the business versions was only available to corps for a long time but anyone can get it now) or ultimate. the latter versions have a lot more crap running in the background by default. or manually disable everything you don't need when gaming.

 

by standard do you mean basic?

Home Premium compared to Business - the only thing Home has going for it is the built-in DVD decoder.

If by one of the versions of Business you mean Enterprise, I would highly suggest against Enterprise.

If cost is a factor, it's a toss-up between Home and Business. If you don't need remote desktop and would prefer not to pirate DVD software, go for Home.

Of course, you can get the Ultimate upgrade for under $100, and you can use the disc to run a full installation.

 

yeah, i meant Home Premium = standard

business versions (either business or business enterprise)

and then ultimate which is more like business on steriods than home premium

the fact that home premium has LESS stuff is better for gaming imho. at least the performance metrics on my systems indicate so.

i have used all the editions. ultimate is a dog imo

 

i went vista with a new i7 build as well, but ive not gotten anything in mail yet, so we'll see how it works out.
