Does anyone know if its possible to run ESX or an open source equivalent on an AMD FX 8120 CPU and an ASROCK 960GM motherboard without to much hassle?

ESXi only supports certain chipsets and hardware, but you can run other VMWare products on your hardware and it will work quite well. I havent really messed with virtualization in about a year or so but VMWare has been the best in my experience. For both flexibility and performance. But if you want to stick with just Windows stuff and have a server OS then Hyper-V is pretty easy to set up and use too.

If you just need to run VM's then you can install VMWare Player for free with no problems
If you just need to create one or two you can use the trial of Workstation and then run those VM's in the Player once your trial expires.
