consoles and pc voice comm conflict?

    So the other thread reminded me of another issue I have had in the past with using voice comms over my PC while playing on the playstation. Many times we will be playing a shooter or rocket league on the PS and bsing over ventrilo or especially discord or mumble and my voice comms will get spikes of lag but my gameplay does not.

    Could this be because the console is accessing the same port the pc is using for the chat? I tried opening the ports, I tried using DMZ, but it still happens sporadically. I generally do have a different headset connected and muted to the ps4 that I sometimes use in PS party and dont recall having issues with that spiking.

    I say especially Discord because it has the latency meter and I can see it spiking off and on

    Don't know. I know a lot about hardware and how network works and the equipment for it, but I am not really on the configuration and software side of it all. If I had to guess Id say maybe Discord data isnt being flagged as voip type traffic and isnt getting the packet priority it needs to keep from lagging or getting garbled? Maybe @Que or @israf3l could give a better answer.

    VOIP and video is going to be much more sensitive in most cases than other applications. A good games network code can work around some packet loss or jitter issues where things like VOIP you just can't fake a lot of missing data until i breaks. You are likely having problems with everything on you internet connection or there is a problem down stream after your data is routed down different paths only impacting 1 of the data streams.

    Unless you have some deal setup with your ISP they "should" be treating all data equal. If they were classifying traffic and applying QoS they could only really enforce that to the edge of their network. Once it passes to the next ISP in the path to the server all bets are off on internet traffic.
