My Norton license is soon up and since I built the new box now is the time to switch software if needed. What do you folks suggest running for AV and firewall protection?

    Get rid of Java.
Get rid of Adobe acrobat + reader and get Foxit.
    Browse the internet intelligently.
I use a paid version of Avast but it expires in ~1 month. I'll likely just use MSE after that or keep the free version of avast.

Malware Bytes and Spybot are what I use. Both free and lightweight. They caught stuff my subscription one didn't find.

On 7 I use microsoft security essentials. I've use avast and AVG in the past...I like MSE because it's pretty much seamless and never bothers you about subscriptions or upgrading.
    On 8 it's built in.

Kaspersky business started using a ton more CPU resources than last years version did. I hate it on our business PCs now.

I just use the microsoft one. Being not stupid on the interwebs is the only real protection.

I use Avast! free for my antivirus because it has some of the highest detection rates apart from Kaspersky but Kaspersky uses too much system resources, so I liked Avast better. For a firewall I dont really use any software firewall, I use the built in hardware firewall on my router and windows firewall. I dont really want to pay for firewall software and its too hard to find a good "free" firewall that works well.
