So I'm taking this class online right now and I am enjoying it. I have to do an evaluation every time I finish a Unit and they seem to always ask if there are any immediate applications for this new knowledge in my life. Generally, no, not until I start University in september for sciences. The only time I actually used a piece of info was the basic trig portion when figuring out what would happen if I flipped the stem on my bike upside down. I needed to know how much of a drop it would be. So, I was wondering if anyone has used this stuff in their day to day goings on. I would imagine this would be very field specific. I believe in the US it's called Calc 1 or 2. Not sure. It deals with graphing of polynomials, transformations, modeling events, trig functions and identities, logarithmic calculations to name a few things.
generally, calc 1 & 2 deal directly with the calculus functions where trig is a previous class (at least in high school... i started college with honors calc 3, so im not sure how freshmen math works either). trig application from my freshmen engineering class if i can remember it after 8 years: line your thumb up with the top of a building and the pinky with the bottom of it (thumb being lined up with your eye arm fully extended). now pace off the distance to the building, the lengths of the "triange" between eye, thumb and pinky, and height to your arm forming the triangle. you can use trig to determine the height of the building. perhaps not helpful, but it is an application of learning trig in the most basic way.
