Great article on both games : <<I half worry that my 1999 self would be disappointed. We’re living in the last of the great sci-fi-sounding years, and he’d have been hoping I’d be playing some kind of ludicrously intricate immersive-sim derivative. But if he asked, I’d be forced to confess that I’m playing Starcraft and Freespace. He’d have been disappointed. But fuck him. He always was a snot. I’m back with two of the best games of the late 90s. And what interests me is that in two games that were relatively contemporary with one another can walk such radically opposing paths and still end up in the same place…>> http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/03/04/11-12-years-starcraft-2-versus-freespace-2/
Tried reading it but stopped after the third paragraph. Was that shit Google translated from Korean or something? Read like 3rd grade grammar while using the built in thesaurus to make it sound better.
How are you going to put a space sim and an RTS together? Unless I am missing something about Freespace? Never did play it though =/
I played Freespace 2, which is the one the article refers to. There was only one ship with a beam cannon of any kind in FS1. I'm not sure why the comparison between SC and FS2. The games were contemporaries, and at the top of their fields at the time, but one field is still going where the other was the last of its line. Space sims not only fell in popularity, games became more expensive to make. And so the greatest space sim so far is running on a modified Descent engine, dating back to 1993. Not many people seem to remember this, but FS2's multiplayer was terrible. In its day it was nearly unplayable outside of university T1s and LANs because it needed so much bandwidth to deal with all the moving objects. That was back when universities provided unmetered bandwidth way beyond what you'd ever get at home, of course.
Yeah, that's another series for which I don't expect to see a successor any time soon. The company is still around; they've done the Saint's Row and Red Faction series, but they aren't big enough to revisit their old projects.
yeah, me too i know there was a sweet space sim(and i usually dont touch them at all) with free something in it... lol... i just remember docking at certain points and getting out to perform some dialog options, and then blasting baddies in space.
