With my new graphics card came Alien: Isolation as an extra goodie. Scheduled for release in early October, it seems to be the newest game with the Alien license, one that goes admittedly a whole different route than the others: it is a survival horror game at heart made by Creative Assembly (Total War series). Should it turn out to be a failure as a game (as so many Alien games did), I hope I can at least use it as a graphics benchmark of some sort.
I'm a HUGE Alien fan and am really excited for this game, especially after they announced it's survival horror. I even liked the last game, but only because I paid $5 for it. I can't in good conscious, pay full price for this new game, considering 1) The last Aliens game was horrible if purchased for anything more than $20, and 2) Creative Assembly is known to make some of the buggiest games ever (I own almost every Total War game). After Rome TW2, I vowed never to buy from them.
I couldn't agree more. Creative Assembly has a track record of releasing the most buggy games that take months and several expansion to get somewhat fixed. Rome 2 aside, even with Shogun 2 it was no different. Nonetheless I am interested to see how Alien: Isolation turns out and how the game's launch is being handled this time around by Creative Assembly.
Indeed, I will be keeping an eye on this game's launch, and will play it one way or another. Even if the game gets bad reviews. As an Alien fan, I just can't resist delving into that thrilling atmosphere.
Well they may be buggy but they are good games However this is different than their usual business so i'm not sure on how it'll turn out, i'll wait for the tests.
Good game so far. Graphics are a bit old but solid atmosphere and gives the feeling of a great horror so far.
Alien: Isolation is really solid. They nailed the atmosphere and setting of the Alien franchise perfectly. The graphics and the sound design play a huge part in achieving that. I only wish they had implemented proper anti-aliasing; here is hope it gets added in a patch since the post-processing AA in the game cannot deal with the jaggies and shaders employed in Isolation.
Isolation uses an in-house developed engine too, so you cant trick the drivers by renaming the .exe file to something else to get AA enabled. If you have an AMD card, did you try to see if SMAA works? It is a post-processing effect added on top of the image so it should work with most games even if it isnt coded into the game engine.
Both SMAA (up to T2) as well as FXAA can be enabled in game, but these anti-aliasing solutions fail to tackle jaggies and shader aliasing to a respectable degree (Isolation has a lot of high-contrast scenes), so excessive shimmering is frequently present in Isolation. Image quality leaves a lot to be desired as a direct result (cf. Face-Off: Alien: Isolation).
