Why a laptop? I never understood why gaming laptops are so popular. With my experience in laptops, they don't last as long as desktops. The batteries die quickly and the parts are rarely able to be custom.

I built my gaming PC several years ago and recently to improve performance all I did was drop $160 on 16GB RAM and that made it feel like a new PC.

Personally, I think for longevity (and to save money in the long run) you should consider a desktop rather than the laptop.

Also - our TECH TALK forums are the best place to get seasoned advice from the XoO tech pros who know what they're talking about and are more than willing to help you in your tech endeavors. :)

I don't want a laptop, but I can't take my desktop to college and my parents won't buy me a new one. They will buy me a laptop though.

    Thanks abdulrapidz.

Both of those are definitely considered "gaming laptops". They have really nice specs, but that also means battery life will be terrible. Dont expect to be able to use this anywhere for more than 30-45 minutes without having to plug it in. The real thing you just need to decide on is if you want lots of gaming power in a laptop at the expense of being bulkier and more heavy (The GT70), or if you would rather have a faster "overall" feel outside of gaming, while also being significantly smaller and lighter to carry around (the GS70). Battery life will probably be somewhat similar between the two models, even though the higher spec'ed one has a 50% larger capacity, because it also has things that draw a lot more power.

If you really dont care about battery life at all, you can always overclock the GPU in the GS70 Stealth by a TON and bring it to probably within 10-15% of the performance of the GT70 model. Maxwell cards are known to be able to clock extremely high.

EDIT: one thing I just noticed though that you need to figure out if you need or not is that the G70 does not have a CD/DVD drive in it. Most things can be streamed or downloaded anyway, and you can transfer via USB perfectly well. But you might need a CD for school stuff.

I know this comment doesn't add any insightful information, however just wanted to point out that while I do have a decent desktop, I also look for a new laptop every 3 years or so. I always get the same question of why would I want to buy a gaming laptop, the people always have perfectly good reasons to not get one. But keep in mind that some people really need to move around a lot for work. I'm often in 4 different provinces for 2-3 months of the year and considering I usually fly there with all my kit, I just don't have room to drag along a desktop. I guess I just wanted to point out that sometimes portability is a requirement in the decision to purchase one, not just value.
