I'm surprised nobody has posted about this game yet. Turn on that 1080p It's an RTSFPS, or a Real-Time Strategy First Person Shooter. Teams are the classic Marines vs. Aliens. Each team has a "Commander" who views the map from a top-down RTS style, placing structures, giving orders and researching upgrades. The rest of the team runs around the map, following orders from the Commander, pushing for resources, and building placed structures in an FPS styled view. Think of Starcraft but instead of creating units, your units are FPS players. It's quite an awesome concept. The game is in open beta right now, I bought it back in 2010 when it first went into closed beta. Since then, the game has undergone numerous performance and content updates, their latest patch includes the giant alien, The Onos. The game is definitely worth the $30 I paid for it. If you're interested, the studio that is producing it is totally independent and when you pre-order you get access to the open beta. Maybe because we have been hearing about it since NS 1 came out and it's almost as big a running joke as DNF
I love the first game, and hope the second game does really well. I too havent played the latest patch but last I played the game was a HUGE mess. Wasnt stable at all, couldnt do half the basic things, maps were terribly glitchy, graphics would bug out. I think the worst design idea the company ever had was to get away from the Source engine and to design their own game engine. A game engine is incredibly complex and very hard. It takes teams of people usually. They arent John Carmack here even though it seems like the lead designer is trying to be. The small team of them simply doesnt have the expertise or resources to make a game in any reasonable amount of time while designing the whole engine for it too. Its been in development for what? 8 years now?
I've been playing it quite a bit lately, it really is amazing. The dev team has fixed a lot within the last few patches, so it's most certainly playable. However, the balancing issue could still be viable, I see a lot of alien wins. But for the most part I think it depends greatly on how effective your teams players are. If they don't know the strategies, they can't use them. There's a lot of people in the game who think it's a typical FPS deathmatch and try to retard-smash everyone and everything without listening to commanding tactics. If you played NS1, you'd know it's not a game about kills but about positioning and resources.
I use to play the shit outta the first game and was a beast, however, I tried playing the second, and yes it was a total mess.
It's improved a lot since the beta apparently. Large scale coordinated PvP, sounds like a successful XoO division to me.
When was the last time you played it? They've made numerous balancing, performance, and content changes, and will continue to do so until the game is polished and released. If you still have it, I recommend playing it again.
Maybe we should all set a time this Saturday to play some matches? Anytime during the day works for me, Ill be on playing Firefall anyway when not doing this
Due to my schedule and budgeting I won't be joining you guys for NA2, I nom reth to spearhead this one.
$35: http://www.naturalselection2.com/buy Anyone still up for some games this Saturday? Maybe 3pm EST? How many people actually have the game or are interested in it?
I also loved the first NS game. I viewed it like playing first person starcraft... it was aaaaaamzing. Nothing more fun then swooping down from the rafters as one of those flying creatures... ohhhhhh yay.... Only problem is they have been making NS2 for like 10 years now it seems. Its reminding me of another duke nukem.
The game is functioning, and working/playable, it is just super slow development. I am down for weekend plays with XoO, just add me on steam@ [XoO] Riot. or http://steamcommunity.com/groups/xoons2
Tried playing with PersonalRiot today but couldnt get it working. I crashed a LOT and after the reinstall it wouldnt even work. Updated graphics drivers and everything became all dark and glowy looking with terrible performance. Guess ill have to wait for the next major build to start playing. Oddly enough, Riot was running perfectly fine.
Just finished up playing a few matches with PersonalRiot, took some screenshots in the process. Riot as an Onos: Getting shot at: Evolving into a Lerk: I think this game has got full XoO potential, talk to Riot or myself and join the NS2 steam group. We'll get some matches going in the future. Not sure what was going on with Enigma's machine, but everyone shouldn't have the same problem. Hope it gets fixed soon Enigma.
I actually just got a Dedicated NS2 server up and running on my other computer. If sometime in the future XoO wants to meet up and play against each other we could do it there.
