Rofl. No problem! Admittedly very true. My suggestion was really based on the idea that you were upgrading & keeping this computer for at least half a year or more. I would still suggest buying 2 no matter what though for two reasons: 1- they're not that expensive (although yes they are significantly more expensive than DDR2, but let's face it, no one gets DDR1 anymore so it's expected) 2- 2GB of RAM is still a big difference even compared to 1GB of RAM and will make your life a lot easier, for however long you plan on using that computer. If you're not going to change it out within the next few months, I'd suggest putting in the extra 40$. If you managed to run your comp on 256 ram you'll be pretty much in heaven with 2GBs. Everything will run a lot smoother, and not just games. Although I have to say, you should DEFINITELY be searching for a new computer and SOON. P4 is quite old and quite crappy and even if you just get dual core instead of the quad and six- core that's out now, dual core is still a giant leap and will make a giant difference. & Get a solid state drive if you can, too. They're pretty damn pricey when you go up in size but I can't begin to explain the difference it will make. Get a smaller sized solid state & get a 500GB or 1TB external HD of any kind to actually store everything. Just put your applications on the solid state. It makes a huge difference in terms of speed, efficiency, even the heat & noise your computer gives off. (& a new processor will help with the heat too). The difference in usage latency when using a SSD compared to a HDD is huge. I would highly doubt this mobo could handle an ssd or 2 gigs of ram. I can't see any reason as to why you'd assume it's sata and not IDE. This box has to be at least 7 years old.
Plus even if it could use SATA, it would be SATA 1.5, which would limit a SSD considerably. and on top of that with testing I have done across multiple chipsets, the SSD would run horrible anyway just cause how the chipset would interact with it. SSDs do not work well on chipsets more than a few years old. Back then the nForce 4 chipset was the best chipset around (and was also Nvidia's last good chipset) and a SSD runs like crap on them. I have also tested it on an Intel chipset from back then although I cant remember the name of which one. Also I dont know if it matters to anyone, but in Q2 of 2011 there will be 16 core processors out.
So, any way I can take the ram I buy in this one and stuff it into a newer box? Or is that just silly?
No you cant, its older RAM and not pin compatible, plus it is uber slow and you don't even want it in a new PC even if you could.
