Yes you read it. Most games are coming out with it now. Violence, nudity and 'strong' language. Truly what is this 'strong' about? Seems to me everyday talk. Now is there 'weak' language too? Thought that I'd ask.
Just because strong language is 'everyday' talk doesn't make it right. Kids have been swearing like sailors from the age of about 8-10 for years, but that doesn't make it right. Strong language to people in our community isn't much of an issue because we're all adults. But 'strong' language is becoming more frequent in video games that kids are 'getting hold of'
I'm not a fan of foul language.. only time I use it is when I am alone (even then rare and just out of frustration) or its part of a joke. I don't say it in public or around family (unless its a joke and no kids around). IMHO it says a lot about a person if that's all the know how to say, or say it every other word. I figure most kids say it to be "cool" so I mostly relate it to a 'kid thing'. =P
You wouldn't like me on vent. <3 That's hardly a fair analysis. Anyone who has ever heard me on vent knows I 'swear like a sailor' but I hardly think that warrants me having a weak mind. That isn't to say I won't stop cursing if I'm asked to stop. If you're in the channel with someone who dislikes cursing but you continue to curse, that's just due. :O
I'm all for cursing in a fit of rage (or a scattered assortment of other scenarios), but I've found that when one uses it as a means to enforce an argument, it has the opposite effect. I think that is more where swearing == having a weak mind. It brings to light that they have no other alternative than to beat a point into you by using "strong language"
The level of my swearing directly corresponds with my alcohol consumption. If I start talking like "yeah then you fucking get the fucking what the fuck thing shit where am I fucking going?" you know what's going on.
Hilarious! I guess I cuss slightly above average. My wife is a sailor though....and in front of our 2 year old who is repeating every word that we say. That just frustrates the shit out of me.
There is a misconception that using foul language (believably) 'legitimizes' a piece of entertainment... I'm not sure why. Personally, these words seem like a crutch that free a person from thinking of appropriate words... I mean, f*** can be used as every word in a sentence for crying out loud....
I swear like a sailor on many occasions - mostly because I was a sailor and the son of a sailor. I also have several advanced degrees and what most would consider a "strong" mind. I think foul language equates more to a lack of creativity or composure, rather than a weak mind. But there are also times where it is very appropriate to use very strong language, to denote the severity of the situation. This is especially useful when you normally are pretty clean in your every day conversation. That said, I think it is important to set a good example for kids as they don't readily recognize the differences in the context for using "colorful" language, and instead just see the model and try to emulate it.
I've also been known to talk like that first thing in the morning after a night out, prior to getting coffee. Please tell me that "hung over" is on the list of acceptable scenarios as well...
If you ever read the MPAA logo under where it says it's rated 'R' (on a movie), the words "strong language" typically appear. That it's appearing on games now is no news to me. It simply reminds me of one thing that has to go with all of this: The parents have total control over what games their child gets. By this extension they have no right to get offended when a game comes out with a MA rating and "strong language" in the accompanying box. They really should be glad that it's there so they can make an informed decision about what game their child plays and whats in it. So yeah. Thats my 2 cents, and you can keep the change.
Fuck and Shit are the kings of curse. If a game or movie doens't have those two, it shouldn't be considered strong. ..In my opinion.
