so maybe i'm missing something, but this looks just like (and sounds like) city of heros/villans. can someone in the know lay this out for me? is champions made by the CoH guys or is this a knockoff or what?

Imagine City of Heroes with a more classical MMO approach, better graphics (a lot more comic book style) and many more options.

I think the best part is the fact that they are not limited by the whole "city" pattern from CoH. The Hero System (fantasy book system, kinda like DnD) is a world full of aliens, crazy monsters and many more. We're talking about going from under the sea to the Moon, passing by a desert, Canada, Alien infested city, etc.

What I meant by a more classical approach is the fact that the game has a levelling system with upgrades, there is an inventory with gear and most of the quests aren't instanced like CoH. There are also public quests like Warhammer and instances like WoW, there are also HQ missions which are the same as the old CoH missions and they usually involve lore based quests.

It won't be a game for everyone, you need to like the surreal world of superheroes and the comic book graphics.

This takes me back a few years. I loved playing CoH and a few other games with Xen. Checked out the Champions website on and whim. Hopefully the successor will be better than the original. I had a good chuckle when I saw you guys in the recruiting threads.

Hopefully the game will bring something unique to the MMO table. (aka not a WoW/EQ clone. Not holding my breath.)

If you got any beta invites floating around I'd like to hang out with the Xen group again. Haha shameless begging.

Depends on how many people are playing it when it goes live I believe right?

I know this is the only game due out this year that I have any real interest in right now but I haven't played it yet so I'm not making any promises either.

depends on the number of people that we end up with in beta on if we will have a dedicated forum. If we have like 4-5 people, no ;)

booo for the inventory / gear part ;) I liked in CoH how gear wasn't a factor....
If it turns out to be too close to WoW I will be sadly disappointed... CoH was unique from EQ and WoW and most the other MMOs and IMO it was unique in a good way...
The lack of gear to me was great... no fighting over loot and no "must be geared with X items to join my group" crap.

They are currently aiming at 25% of your character's strength coming from the gear. That is the official word for now but that may change depending on balance. That isn't much, it's closer to CoH's enhancement rather than actual WoW gear where the gear means 90%+ of your character's strength.

that might be good then :)
I liked the enhancement system where you could tweak your power sets some :)
Will the gear change your costume? If so I hope they are letting ya dye stuff or something ;) That is the other thing with CoH vs WoW... you get to really design your costume in CoH, where in WoW everyone looks the same as everyone else that can raid... and they even recycle gear designs 1/2 the time so it looks the same from tier to tier :(
(I remember being so happy to get rid of my priests T2 shoulders, and then the crafted primal mooncloth stuff was the same freaking design :( )

Only talking about released information of course, some gear will give access to different costume pieces at the Tailor. Gear will never force a look on you.

There is much more to the gear system, but that's gonna wait the NDA lift ;)

whats has been said is that some gear will have special effects or modifers to powers, others will effect stats etc. when you get new gear peices that effect your costume your able to pick what it looks like and will always have the gear even if you delete it from your inventory.

there also advantages that effect your powers, these are more like your enhancements. there general ones and power specficones and change as little as the end/ momentum cost to changed how the power works compeltly. i.e. changing the power from a normal click to a 30 sec toggle with a cooldown. you can also rank your powers from 1-3, and the game assumes most powers to be at rank 2. so rank 3 are overpowered and rank 1 are under powered.

and all thats not even getting into the power frameworks

Thanks for the information. I try not to post too much information considering the line between Closed Beta and Public Information is long gone in my brain. I don't wanna get my ass sued and lose my job because I slipped accidentally ;)

Norrak what is your actual role in the game? Networking? Programming, Quest make< Texturer or art work? So i knwo when i play the game and something is good i can be like, "Yaaaaaaa, Norrak worked on this thing". Or if its bad and buggy i can be like, "Pft, BAD Norrak, BAD!".

Is there going to be an open beta sooner than the release date? I haven't found any info on it, but since they published the release date, it makes me think that companies are FINALLY starting to realize that the first month of release is open beta.

open betas are usually a few days to a week or two max, and are usually for stress testing servers to see how if the server will handle the number of players they expected. Any bugs reported after closed beta is done, probably will not be fixed until after release.

Open betas also cause some hype about the game just before the release, so it's a marketing thing as well as a stress test.
