Link It's three pages long, so I'll just quote the good bit: That's right. The pirates think that threatening revenge will make the US back off.
A shame the pirates have now learned that if they kidnap a few americans they get more press time than if they do thousands of people from non western nations
That assumes that these pirates have a political agenda. Everything I've seen points to the piracy being done for profit, not to hurt western nations. Meaning the funding comes from when someone pays the ransom and recruits can easily be found in any of the poor villages in the area as Somalia is a very poor country and piracy is very profitable unless a serious effort is made to stop it. All I can see publicity doing is increase the number of people calling for something to be done about these pirates.
Pretty sure they would accept a couple mil in exchange for taking over a few more freighters owned by specific groups. Its a win win for them. Get paid just to attack the ship and then paid again for ransoms.
Pirates have been doing this ransom thing for a looooong time. Shipping companies do not normally let this news get out to the media. Not sure why they let this one slip by. But it's about time we're actually taking action. It would be nice if the seas we're safer than in the 18th century. Just like everything else in nature, the only thing this will do is eventually kill off all the weak pirate groups and the strong ones will remain and find new ingenious ways to turn violence into money on the open ocean. It's the "antibacterial soap that kills 99% of bacteria" dilema. The 1% that remain will prosper and grow and multiply and pretty soon your soap only kills 1% of bacteria. But you still have to wash your hands.
then a new type of soap will come out and will get rid of another 99%!!! i wish the leader of the pirates would have like an eye patch on at all times just cause that would be priceless =D
The sad thing is, that it is a business to them. Unfortunately what the pirate said is true, rescuing the one guy will lead to more captives being killed next time. Although their greed will certainly not stop them from taking live hostages and holding them for ransom.
However the more pirates kill hostages, the more call there will be for someone to go in and deal with the problem. So in the long term, killing the hostages is going to hurt the pirates. Unfortunately innocents will be hurt by this, both the crew of the ships and people near the ports the pirates are based out of. But I don't see any other way to deal with the problem.
Considering that they shot from one boat that is bobbing up and down on the ocean, and hit a target on another boat that is also bobbing up and down on the ocean, at night; yeah they are pretty badass.
they shot them at 7:19 go go my birthday (as a time) i just read the story and thats awsome, boat moving up and down a few feet, damn
from 90 meters away, i heard it was in the night, and im sure there was wind speed from the ocean, god...that is so badass, makes me want to be a seal, maybe i will
Was 30 yards and as predicted this just made them more aggressive. They also declared they would just autokill any americans they come across and avoid this shit again.
In days past we would have just shown up with overwhelming force at their ports and smacked the dirty politicians that protect these pirates right in the mouth. The reason this crap continues to happen is because governments allow it to happen and even encourage it because of the money it brings in to those impoverished countries. Its sad to think that in this day our freighters may need armed escorts but we just need to exterminate the scumbags and let them know that we will not let them get away with this crap anymore.
