Is this true? Have you ever been to Japan? I have found a speed test result from speedtest.net: Japanese Internet vs. North American Internet Just can't believe in that.
seems a little out there... but they do have great internal speeds due to the size of their country as well as large fiber optic availability. however, i only got 4400 FROM japan, so i doubt their speed helps them access non-asian services or hostings. perhaps that's the link's purpose... to sell the book explaining it all, but im skeptical that his ideas are either profound or original. and how speedtest.net pictures without the actual places being shown became a strong argument, i do not know. i get those montreal speeds over much further distances too...
No it's not free access in Japan. When I was over there my host family had to pay by bandwidth usage. So unless that's what the author means by "free" because of no monthly. They made it sound like it was actually a lot more expensive than the states in comparison. And it is if you have to pay by bandwidth usage depending on how much you use.
I don't know about free but there networks are far more advanced and then anything the U.S has. Plus it's nationwide.
And? I mean, woopde-do! There are hundreds of different things between the two nations (japan and us, or japan and canada). To just show those numbers and talk about "their" network without accounting for other things is statistically irresponsible. -Chris
I went to Japan as a foreign exchange student...in 1989. There was no e-mailing home to my family back in those days!
This just seems odd... I assume that they are using dif computers etc. less than 50 miles to montreal, and appx 100 miles to Tokyo.
I don't think he's talking about from the same location. Just the amount of upload/download you can do in the same amount of time.
speedtest is a utility that downloads and uploads particular test files to measure the latency and bandwidth so computer speed alone really has little impact on the result. however, i can ping a site that's 200+ miles away but inside my isp's owned resources and get insane speeds.... or ping something 50 miles away but outside my isp's domain and get slower. the data is misleading or at least incomplete to make an accurate conclusion on the differences
It isn't a pissing contest is it fact. Sorry America isn't the best at everything so there is not need to get all patriotic about it. FACT ! Japan has faster INTERNET speeds and better network than the US. Whoppie DO! !!
Which "America" are you talking about being patriotic? You realize that America is actually 2 continents I'm assuming, so the logical conclusion is that you see people defending the US somehow when it wasn't part of the original discussion as Montreal is part of Canada. I don't think we ever said that internal connections within Japan’s heavily urbanized lands were not faster. They have enough population density to pack their entire country with fiber optics. However, as soon as they load a web page from say Europe or this Patriotic "America" from which Montreal resides, their internal speed means very little. They are suddenly subject to satelites and their connections to the other parts of the world. Back to my orginal reply in that I don't we need a book to realize the internet's local speed isn't as important as global speed (unless, of course, we're 5 miles from the site's server)
