I would like to poin out how crappy public defenders are. They are over-worked, under paid, and generally will try and convince the defendant to plea bargain.
Plea bargaining helps keep the courts from being over worked, unfortunately there isn't any money in justice which is why our courts are so back dated. That and in the US everyone has the rite to representation and a fair trial, which lends itself to abuse of the system. I doubt he beat up the bum because he was homphobic, under the circumstances if the bum called him an asshole, a fucktard, or a dickhead he probably would have done the same thing.

true, but it doesn't mean that its correct system. Also, not everyone has equal rights in a trial. Some get preponderance of the evidence while others get beyond a reasonable doubt. Some are still siting in prison based off the evidence they were selling drugs based off a snitch's testimony with no drugs found or no other evidence collected. I am going to guess either the bum asked for money and the guy told him to fuck off or the guy was being a dick to begin with, either which way it ended up in the homeless guy being punched. They said in the video that they both knew eachother, another thing I realized after I watched it a second time. So I hope it wasn't over just asking for money. As for the courts system, yes it's not perfect but just like basic human rights everyone has a lowest point in which they can hit before things are given to them. At that point they can only go up. The court system set a standard, which it can barely afford, which everyone has the same basic defense if they can't afford it and everyone will be fighting the same opponent if they are in trouble.
