Canada's cities have a major homeless problem as well and I am sure we could dig up some horror stories without trying very hard. I didn't even read the article but I can honestly say if its a bum I wouldn't even look twice, unless I thought he was going to jump me for my sandwich.
You assume a lot Sokar =] Vancouver is kind of weird because you can go 10 blocks and have a completely different moral standpoint from where you started. It's like 80% of the crime, drugs and violence of the city is concentrated into one spot, the police just kind of sweep them into a pile and that forms a community which creates a stable location to stay the hell away from. This is pretty much the only spot in Vancouver which creates moral diffusion in me: http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=google...55,-123.099615&spn=0.000829,0.001727&t=h&z=19
lol at ironjaw for only watching them if they are going to take your sammich and lev for the statement of "which creates a stable location to stay the hell away from" i got a kick but at my school you go like 2 streets over from where the school is and its a buch of run down buildings, kind of weird how fast the setting can change =P
It's a video =P It shows the bum get knocked down then interviews people and everyone is like "man this shit happens everyday". You assume a lot too Lev. Though my point is that everyone is acting so shocked that people would just stand by and watch this happen when it happens everyday. The same people, yes I'm assuming, would've probably done the same thing. It's just the general consensus. Watch the video again if you don't believe me. Ok you might have been that one guy that walked by in 20minutes of the bum being unconscious but assuming more than one person was on the street I believe my assumptions were a little closer to home than saying "OMG who would do such a thing!" Besides you never know how many you've walked by unless you say hi to every bum, drunk, and prostitute just hanging around the street.
hey i just watched the vid again.....who pulled him out of the gutter andput him fully on the sidewalk? the guys who knocked him out or the guy who had the van that he hit his head on?
=O Wut? I think that lawyers REALLY should be a service payed by the government on a salary basis, that way everyone gets a lawyer when they need it and assault cases don't go unaddressed by people who can't afford it.
yeah cause of bullshit systems like welfare, freecare, and healthcare for criminaliens who sneak into the country ..
I guess you haven't heard this story then? http://www2.canada.com/calgaryherald/news/story.html?id=c83de5bb-9e5d-4e1a-b966-0aafe5404fc9 The homeless guy that went to a Canadian hospital and sat dead in the hospital for 34 hours before anyone noticed? I think there's a distinction between someone who saw the man get knocked out and someone who walked by later. I see homeless people sleeping all the time, I don't think they would be too happy if I walked up to all of them and checked their pulse. People who saw the fight and saw him get knocked out on the other hand should have checked it out and called for help if he didn't respond (IMHO anyway)
That's socialism. I don't want to pay for the lawyers of stupid people who go around causing trouble so that an occasional homeless man may have a fighting chance (at nothing). Homeless people are a part of any society and the way we treat them reflects our deteriorating culture as a whole. Parents are to blaim for this.
In the states everyone does get a lawyer. For anything in which someone assaults, steals, etc in a police filed report where they arrest someone the state prosecutes them. Which means the victim doesn't pay a dime EVER. So yes the bum does get a lawyer and its the best one the state can provide. Though the defendant can choose to use the court appointed lawyer or pay for one which may or may not be better. Soci...Democracy at work. Course if the bums family wants to sue that's a whole other story.
Thanks for the info Sokar =] I'm just glad he did get charged for assault, people who are violently homophobic are a danger to society on both a social and physical level.
Haha, you're absoutely right, I forgot. However it is not democracy. It is socialism by definition. Democracy is a respresentative government elected to a certain degree by the people. Socialism is simply taking from the rich and giving to the poor. What's funny is that homophobs are statistically more likely to actually be gay.
Well, denying people lawyers who need lawyers would be just stupid in the big picture because it could deal with those who have money getting screwed out of it before they can win it back, hospitals on the other hand are fine being capitalist because it encourages people to work needlessly hard to invest in the event something bad happens to them, which is great for the country's health, but not that great for the people's health ;D
How is ignoring bums a sign of social decline? I am sure we actually treats bums better than people treated beggars and homeless in the past... seeing how we have programs to aid them and active movements to help the poor which was nonexistant in the past.
Movements to help the poor that were nonexistant in the past is a result of the shift in our government's doctrine. The begining of the progressive era marked the begining of the end of laissez faire economics that essentially put the whole working class into poverty. Of course, the poor, which consisted of the whole working class (see: The Great Uprising, Pullman Strike, somewhere in the 1910's the socialist party won 6% of the popular vote), wanted jobs and they wanted programs to aid the poor because they were poor. The poor had a voice that is nonexistant today.
Well, we have non-GO humanitarian programs all over the place, being GO just makes more money going into the government's pocket instead of it being volunteer run.
