Here are some general things about Earthrise.

Factions

As mentioned before, characters will be able to affiliate with either Continoma or the Noir rebellion, stay unaffiliated as neutral characters that follow their own individual goals or pursue a path as criminals who live on the fringe of civilizations and oppose all order with bloodthirsty intent.

You can even form a Guild made of renegades set to take over territories, earn resources or wage a war.

Characters and Development

Characters in Earthrise will not have classes or take exclusive character development paths. Players will have the same choice of skills and abilities.

This system will allow players to modify their abilities to a certain extent. They will be able to create new abilities builds and receive a slight boost but there will always be some disadvantage that they have to live with and take into consideration in almost every situation the ability comes in play. Think of this as the paper/rock/scissors game, where “the best” character template will be beatable by another “best” character template.

Characters may have the same skills developed to the same value and have access to the same abilities, but their choice of modifications of abilities will shape their skills and game play approach.

All items will come from the labor of other crafters, designers or manufacturers. We are talking about hundreds of different item templates, hundreds of different designs that can be combined together cumulatively. Quality of manufactured items will also be a very important factor, including several very cool ideas we are juggling with that throw a little sense of luck in the equation. Players might even find out that there are multiple approaches towards attaining certain effect from a weapon, armor or a device.

Questing

While most of the gameplay resolve around a sandbox model where players actions are paramount, Earthrise will provide players with a complex setting and environment, along with compelling storyline where players can invest time if they desire to. These quests will develop around the conflict between Continoma and Noir and many of them will have multiple solutions in order to allow players to choose their side - or change it. While some quests will always be available for players to look back and change what they have done, most of these quests will not be repeatable.

Territory Control

Contested territories will allow guilds to conquer, build and develop their own base of operation there, mine rare and important resources that will reflect on the global economy, use their own factory to easily produce specific items, have quick and easy access to the global markets, and defend it from the ambitions of the other guilds. In order to gain control over a territory, a guild must make it through the territory defenses and seize the territory's control building. Control buildings won't be easy to take over. The more upgrades that are placed on the control building, the more resilient to takeover it becomes and often attackers will have hard time taking over a territory without ensuring that they have destroyed all defenses in sight and the defenders won't come back again more powerful than before. Guilds will not be able to control portions of their opponent's territories, like conquering individual mines or buildings - once the control building is conquered, the whole territory passes in the hands of the conquering guild. This includes any buildings that were left behind from the previous owner, but worry not about your investments - buildings will not only be custom-built by players, but also able to be dismantled, though it won't be easy for the defeated guild to just dismantle and pack its assets before they acquiesce.

Smuggling

Each of the two main factions in the game - Continoma and Noir - have different views on technology and try to monopolize, restrict or even outlaw certain technologies that they cannot completely control. For example, Continoma hypocrite officials will prosecute the use of technologies retrieved from the mutated fauna, while Noir will see weaponry based on the unfathomed possibilities of the human mind as a dangerous direction to thread in (and one Continoma could use to manipulate them).

The players will not be able to craft, store and trade forbidden items within controlled environment such as electronic warehouses and shops. More than that, items based on technologies that could be possibly seized by any side of the conflict cannot be insured, which makes these items very difficult to keep for yourself in the wild - but don't worry, there's always a way, although pricier. Items based on such technologies will be restricted in secure areas and will trigger aggressive actions from the guards. Some guards will only be looking for whatever weapon or armor the player is carrying and will be easy to fool. The player needs just to put it back in his inventory and walk by, whistling innocently. But most often you won't be that lucky - some guards, and you'll know when you see them, will be actively scanning your inventory with special equipment. This means that you will be attacked for carrying restricted or illegal items, and this is where Smuggling comes in. Smuggling basically resolves in carrying sensitive items out of territory where it is allowed to territory where it is made illegal or where there are no laws (and the risk of losing these items is high). When players walk in a territory where such items are illegal, they will have to hide their inventory from the scanners and the watchful eyes of the guards. In territories where no laws abide, certain players will use technology and skill to probe other player's inventory and discover whether they have items made of certain material that could possibly wield a high profit if attacked. Apart from these law restrictions, there will be places where willing parties might be involved in free trade. There's nothing to say that Continoma or Noir can't get hold on items or technologies that the other side possesses and manufactures; all this is up to the players and how they want to become rich in Earthrise - either by free trade and fair rivalry or through monopoly, racketeering and good ol' brute force. It's up to you; if you had this choice, what would you do?"

Organizations

By doing favors for these organizations, players are able to gain access to "design technology" that these specific organizations have a monopoly on. Players can in turn, apply this technology to items, creating unique, powerful, and highly-sought after creations.

Alpha Sisterhood. This organization is comprised of female scientists, who train their minds and emotions through consuming training to achieve the ability to control energy currents with a psychomorphic interface. Their studies over emotive interfaces have allowed them to create a new direction in armament, called Cybermentalism. Their goal is to achieve a new level of evolution, falling in line with the Continoma politics.

Seeyen - A subculture of people with incredible psionic gift, the Seeyen have chosen a life of seclusion far from the prying eyes of the rest of the citizens in a village located at the western beach of the island.

Consular Guard - They believe in law and justice, at any cost. Gathered at first from SVS officers, they attract promising subjects from the civil population and through long and hard training they maintain an elite combat division, directly funded by Continoma to fight against criminal activities across the island.

Enforcers – A group of veteran soldiers united by their dark and criminal past make up the Enforcers. Once they sided with Continoma as mutant extermination squad- sent on the worst assignments where they were supposed to eliminate all “inconvenient” subjects to the current regime. When they became the “inconvenient” ones, they left Continoma and went independent, siding with Noir and even the criminal Syndicate. As coldblooded killers, hardened through fanatic massacres against mutantkind, these renegade soldiers believe in brute firepower and intimidation.

The Codiax - One of the strongest allies of Noir, the Codiax is comprised of rebel biology scientists who initiated a coup against Continoma and were backed by the military and economic opposition at the time. When their direct assistance is not needed by Noir, The Codiax works on secret experiments over genetics and biologic weapons based on whatever knowledge they can extract from the mutants. These experiments are seen as "troublesome" by some, however the organization still persists.

The Phoenix – The Phoenix are a union of renegade scouts, many of whom have shown support to Noir in the days before and after the Coup. As secretive as any spy organization could be, in politics the Phoenix leans towards Noir mostly because any links to their previous position of glory in Sal Vitas have been severed. They currently trade with stolen technology and information from their secret agents in the great metropolis, and in turn sell it to Noir - as long as they pay well. Should Noir ever fail to deliver on payments by accident or design, they can expect to find themselves having to procure another source quickly.

The Syndicate - When Continoma deserted the less promising population within The Nest that did not follow fanatically the political propaganda they put out, they did not expect what became of the first pioneer settlement years later. After the destruction of the old world, the area became a cesspool of criminal activity ruled by the Syndicate, an organization built on the same merciless principles and tightly woven underground connections as a current day mafia. They set the laws of conduct between the many criminal organizations and bandit squads that roam the island, killing and pillaging. A group with unclear long-term goals, The Syndicate are always trying to stay on the winning side in the conflict between Continoma and Noir.

The Red Dragons – Wielding the power of Law and Order in the Eastern Garden, the Red Dragons are in firm control of the underground black market. Placed in a very powerful position to trade not only with restricted and prohibited technologies, they also enjoy the power of having connections with all other organizations. Few organizations can afford to call The Dragons their enemy. Honor is paramount to this organization; if anyone dares to take it away, they strike back with brute force and primal aggression. They work hard to keep their neutral status, maintaining a careful balance between Continoma and Noir.

The Nathurians – Group of eccentric scientists who stray from all senseless political struggles on the island, as they often relate the conflict between Continoma and Noir. They follow a nearly religious belief of balance and symbiosis with the nature, picturing the mutated ecology of the island as a precious ally in the mutual goal of survival rather than an enemy that has to be destroyed. For them, every direct intervention in the ecologic biosphere is a barbaric act that would repeat the ecologic catastrophe of the war, in their eyes a mistake that cannot be repeated.

Tech Collective – The Tech Collective is a professional organization struggling to defend the rights of a large group of scientists, inventors and manufacturers against the selective censoring of research by Continoma. While they are responsible for the rapid technological advancement of the new society, almost all organizations call them an enemy due to their incredible potential in the arms race in the private sector. As an example, the Tech Collective invented the use of mechanical exoskeletons, whose primary contruction purposes were quickly refashioned for military means by the mutant extermination squads and used later in the conflict between Continoma and Noir.

Earthrise PvP Setup - Part 1 (Faction PK)

Earthrise PvP is all about freedom of choice, personal interest and of course - responsibility. So, to cut the introduction, the answer is YES! Players will be able to attack players affiliated with their own faction. What is very important to understand is that what you can do is not always something you can get away with without consequences. Killing people of the same faction is one of the worst crime, prosecuted by members of both Noir and Continoma. As we have already revealed, security will be provided by Guard NPCs that will act immediately on signs of violence in range. But that is not the only form of security and monitoring that will be present in the game. Often, even if there is no sudden intervention of the law, the crime will be monitored and reported and players will face repercussions later on.

Earthrise PvP Setup - Part 2 (Full Loot)

Earthrise will introduce a full loot system with several major protection mechanisms where players who come victorious in PvP combat can take everything their victim has, as long as their victim has not (a) insured the item; or (b) pays a sizable sum to retrieve an item from his corpse.

insurance of new items can only be done at specific populated places throughout Enterra, not too few to make insurance spots unapproachable but also not too many to make it so widespread that anything is insured minutes after its acquisition.

When a player kills another player, he receives monetary income, portion of the victim's insurance cost. So the killer will earn money from his victims even when he cannot take their items, he will receive money needed for insurance of his own items.

Will there be terminals where u can insure items or will it be an interface thing?
Masthead: Players must visit a civilized settlement and access a terminal to safely choose what items in their inventory to insure. This is intended to make insurance a logistic problem - as you cannot choose what items to insure in the wilderness (at death you can repeat the old insurance anywhere, but can't customize it - either all or nothing), you may fall in a surprise attack by other players who will loot anything you've collected. There will be ways around it and you won't have to travel long to find one, so the risk will be moderate at best.

Everything in your inventory will be allowed to be insured?
Masthead: As we mentioned before, certain items will not be insurable and depending on what designs are placed in a crafted item, it might not be insurable everywhere. For example, certain extremely sought-off resources will not be insurable as no insurance department would accept the risks associated with it. Also, some designs will be in the monopoly of certain factions. Using those designs to craft items will make them impossible to insure at the department of the opposing faction. This evens out situations when Continoma players sell Continoma tech to Noir players - sure, Noir players can grab that Conti-gun and shoot around with it; they just can't insure their property over it, so such property would be temporary at best.

What if you are killed by a guard and you do not insure it. Will the guards take it away?
Masthead: Depending on your standing towards guard's Faction, he will either send your property to the insurance department and you get it back upon ressurection, or it gets confiscated. Therefore, yes, guards can loot you if they kill you; they won't touch your loot if another player or a monster kills you. You personally wouldn't want to get caught by guards when you're so hated by the state.

How is the insurance money split up when you are grouped?
Masthead: Evenly. Everyone in the groups who has dealt certain amount of damage to the player gets a split on the insurance money. This is to make things simple and predictable for players and encourage them to contribute in the kill of an opponent. Why would you join the final killing moments of a powerful enemy if you know your chances of reward are next to slim?

Will there be partial insurance?
Masthead: Every single item can be separately insured via terminal. Upon death, players will get a quick option to repeat their last insurance by hot-lining with their insurance company, but to change their insurance from what it was in their last life they'd need to access such terminal. Every item can be insured separately and as armor gear is made of various armor parts, they can be insured piece by piece.

How will you prevent gangs of players simply rampaging across the map for the loot and insurance reward?
Masthead: The spirit of PvP is that players kill other players for a reason. In Earthrise, a lot of that reasoning comes from personal gain - loot and insurance rewards. But PvP is a double-edged sword - you can kill someone and reap the rewards, but you also can be killed in return. That is why we have a guard system that ensures that in many parts of the island, you will get an adequate protection and looting gangs will be discouraged. When more guards get killed in an area will result in more and stronger guards being spawned; at one time a squad of super-strong guards will charge in, and not just obliterate a reckless loot guild, but in fact they'd LOOT the loot guild. Now how's that for a vengeance! At other places however, it'll gonna be gang territory.

Increasing cost of insurance: does this mean...?
Masthead: Your item insurance cost is based on several factors. First, cost of the item, insurance is based on the nominal item price between a nominal minimum (to discourage insurance of cheap items) and nominal maximum (to encourage insurance of expensive items). Second, the legal status of the item. We've already mentioned illegal tech, but there will be designs that make an item a restricted tech, which isn't forbidden to sell but carries a hefty increase of the insurance cost percentage. Third, it's your own standing towards the faction at which you insure your items. If you are Continomian zealot, it's normal for them to give you a cut on the insurance. On the other side, if you have shown your disrespect to the authority, you can expect them to tax your insurance to the point where you either make it with them, or you change sides, forfeit your current insurance and make insurance with your new party. The system is made to discourage penalty-free change of Faction as well as to reward those players who stay true to the ideology of their government.

Q: Will battles over territories involve only single guilds, or can multiple guilds take part in attacking or defending a territory (even though a single guild still gains the territory)?
A: Yes, more than one guild may decide to fight for control over a territory, and more than one guild may try to defend the current controller of a territory. Guilds can cooperate together in a siege battle, yet not every guild will be able to claim ownership over a territory, and this will encourage certain guilds to offer their services as mercenaries, assisting other guilds in combat against the opponents.

Q: Will there be a limit on the number of players in a territory battle?
A:This is a technical question that we tackle through testing internally. We will try to provide for the best mass combat experience possible while making combat manageable and running on everyone's computer. Therefore, for now we cannot give you any hard numbers - but we will want to make it massive!

Q: Will guilds of the same faction be able to attack each others territories?
A: Yes. While Continoma encourages cooperation between guilds working to exploit the resources of the island, it may not guarantee that they don't play hard against each other. In a highly competitive economic environment guilds may find faction affiliation something they will sacrifice in their personal interest.

We have mentioned before, that all items in Earthrise can be created by players. In order to create those items, players will need to have access to certain resources, and only portion of them – the most common materials – can be found in abundance to warrant that any crafter can find them in any quantity he needs for his creation. These resources will be sufficient to craft the most simple and commonly used items, but as a crafter moves towards complex and powerful creations, he will find out that he needs large amount of resources that are not available anywhere but in the contested areas, and items that require them will only become available on the server if players head for the contested areas and start to exploit it's many opportunities.

A guild that wants access to these resources has almost no other option but to engage in the guild vs. guild territorial conquest gameplay, either by conquering a territory or offering protection services to another guild. As guilds capture territories, they can build mines and extract the resources they can use to aid their own guild and control the distribution of powerful items. This creates a lot of interesting economic situations we are currently evaluating and making sure it does not disbalance the world economy if a single guild (or alliance of guilds) decides to monopolize the distribution of certain resource, but in general supporting a conquered territory can be an expensive endeavour and most guilds will try to sell their production (be it raw resource of items based on them) for money rather than hoard large amounts of it.

The Auction House

The personal warehouse will also serve as the basis of player's personal shops, as a number of items can be marked for sale with assigned price. The size of the warehouse and the number of personal items for sale can be expanded by buying warehouse expansions, so players will be limited at first but will be able to turn their small-town garage sale into a profitable market store and take their profits further. Players will be able to access each other player's store by their in-game name, as well as search the global database of available items, with additional tools for market analysis. Guilds will have the same marketing benefits but on a grand scale, with additional management features such as rank-based guild warehouse where guild members of different ranks will be able to provide and withdraw from different sub-accounts and item stashes.

We have segregated the world economy into Continoma and Noir markets. Each market will provide similar tools and features to the players associated with each faction, but not every item - depending on the technologies used in its design - will be welcome for sale everywhere.

Neutral players will have access to both markets, so they will be able to buy items from players of one faction and sell them to players of another faction, reaping profits from the difficulty intended with the limited markets.

When it comes to stealth, players will be able to use a lot of different abilities and options when it comes to hiding their character out of plain view or even better, cloaking their character for someone else and surprising the opponent when he least expects it. Players will be able to become invisible and approach their enemy unexpected, although options for detecting invisibility will be popular enough for the paranoid player who constantly utilizes them to feel safe from being hit from behind. But many other abilities will exist that allow a character to hide their affiliation to either Continoma or Noir, thus faking an ally when he actually is an enemy and therefore be able to sneak past guards and enemy faction members, or abilities that hide criminals' fame which otherwise would make him hunted by the local security. While cover and active hiding behind smaller objects will not be part of the combat system, players will have the option to hide behind buildings and expect to be safe from direct attacks.

Invisibility will play an important role in Earthrise as players will have access to cloaking technology that can let light through from every angle and side and create the optical illusion. This technology will have severe limitations, requiring players to trade off the use of many power-hungry abilities of their suits and weapons in order to support the cloaking effect.

One thing you can know for certain - in Earthrise invisibility will be a tactical tool with serious tradeoffs that must be considered in advance.

Weapons

Ranged weapons do have the disadvantage to use ammunition - every time you hold the mouse button at an enemy, you are burning money, and the more expensive and damaging the choice of ammunition, the more costly the combat will be to your character's bottom line.

Careful planning in order to avoid running in the red via combat will be important, and characters will be discouraged to use their most expensive ammo against enemies that simply do not provide comparable return to the investment. Also, ranged weapons have an advantage in combat from certain distances - when shooting from a too close or too far distance compared to a target, the damage output will be modified - there will be weapons that serve best from the rear of the battlefield, while some ranged weapons serve best as melee fighter's close assistance.

Melee weapons are here to stay, of course! Such weapons carry the same complication of ranged weapons, use of energy from embedded fuel cells that will generate expense to the player and powerful fuel cells should be saved against enemies that provide comparable return.

Probably a candidate for most interesting array of arms is employed by the Cybermentalist, a specialist trained in using special brain interface allowing him to control his weapons using subconscious intuition, emotions and such. We will have more information on the Cybermentalist when we're ready to reveal them, so keep your eyes on the site and future updates.

Bounties and Bounty Hunters - Fucking Sweet!

Anytime a character dies in Earthrise by the hands of some dastardly player-killer, a special object is going to be generated in his possession, called Death Report. On this little piece of electronic paper are the last blurry images of his killer taken directly from his watcher chip. Using this evidence, a player could visit a bounty terminal and announce a bounty against a specific player. When a bounty is announced, it becomes immediately available to all bounty hunters in the game - players, who have registered through paying a hefty fee to be known as bounty hunters and bring order to even risky places where no guards dare to tread.

Either way, the bounty becomes available to all bounty hunters not just one of them, and one vengeance kill will remove the bounty.

Well said, though there are a good deal of sci-fi themed mmo's on the way.

As for Earthrise, it sounds good and should be a good game if they can deliver and make it something that stands out on the market. Ill be keeping an eye on this one.

let me just say this is not like EVE. Its post apoc, you play in avatar mode, no ship combat like it may sound.

But open world pvp, crafting, avatar combat, etc.

Also the copy paste is the easy and quick read version or summary of the posts. Leaving out some of the useless stuff.

EvE wasn't sci-fi it was space/flight. I'm not a big fan of those games at all.

I was pointing out with the copy paste that all the information for the game is available on the site in which some people can't seem to read so they make up random assumptions about the game.

TBH after reading the games seems REALLY fucking interesting now. I never gave it much thought till now. A real contender against Darkfall and Mortal Online (2 similar games...although these are fantasy)

Agreed! Been hoping a good sci-fi MMO would come along for awhile now, and Earthrise is certainly sounding promising. Always hard to tell if it's going to be any good though until you dip your toes in the water ...

Earthrise is post apoc, not really sci fi, although it is a future post apoc.

so no ship combat etc...its not eve.

perhaps jumpgate you should look into.

now if only they were going the planetside route with having full out vech. warfare as well. I still miss running across a battlefield to look up and see a bunch of Reavers (jet type things) fly overhead while firing rockets at the enemy tower we are getting ready to attack!

I think they said they would have vehicles but, nothing like what PS had. IMO this will be the closest thing to PS for a while.
