This may be the end of diamond mining.

Considering the lack of ethics in the diamond mining business, I wouldn't shed a tear if it became obsolete...

I'm waiting for the day where our currency is made of diamond facet disks.
Unfortunately I'd hate to think how this will effect vibrational magicks and the like, I remember diamonds had the most potential for healing in those circles, but then again titanium also had good properties so who knows.

Anyway, what exactly is the aprox base cost to produce these? What is the ratio to other raw materials in cost?
Furthermore, will we be seeing diamond car windshields? Diamond biker armor? Diamond bullets?

If there was a market for it they could make it profitable. The thing is there will probably still be people willing to pay more for real diamonds simply because they are real, even if the quality is lesser. Hell the invention of this artificial diamonds could cause natural diamond prices to rise even more. We already use low grade diamonds for saws etc. why not?

It shouldn't be too hard to run some tests to see what material is most effective, except that none of them get any results above placebo in the first place. So I expect them to make up some BS about how the natural diamonds work, the synthetics don't, all while they are using glass thinking its diamond.

    Those are some good questions.

Lev, as for "diamond reinforced" items, I'd put money on seeing diamond reinforced glass in abundance if this process can create cheap diamonds. From some of the things I have read on the glass, it's super hard but only weights 10% more then standard glass. This means you could make ballistic panes of glass for things (like humvees) that are a quarter of the size.

Hell, you could probably have bullet proof windows all over your house for cheap like this.

i saw a thing on the discovery channel or something like a year ago about this and the ones they made then wernt as high a grade as real diamonds and they took i think 5-10 years to make one (dont remember how big) but the over all price was pretty cheap

and yea i dont think diamond mines are going anywhere people always want the "real thing" or "the orgional" no matter how good the man made ones are i guess its just bragging rights

I want a layer of diamond inside my shoes, or at least the toe. How strong is a cut diamond shell I wonder?

Diamond surface for my sunglasses..I'm tired of getting scratches on my shades. Some diamond coated press-on fingernails for the wife...that would look sharp..and be sharp.

actually been waiting on the diamond coated sunglasses...saw where they used electron beam to knock off diamond molecules then apply it too glass..this sounds much more realistic.

    Then....when I get older..diamond coated dentures.

The windshield was the best suggestion Ive heard.

Oh and BTW......Hi all...had to stop by and see what my old buds were up too.
