Here's where I'm at so far. http://pcpartpicker.com/user/snagglefox/saved/w3P7YJ I haven't ordered the MB/cpu or case yet. I also plan on getting Fractal's S36 water cooling to go along with the R5 tower. Also haven't selected a PSU yet. The 980 I was able to snatch for $470 instead of the $565 it shows there. So far the biggest problem is being online when Amazon gets the ROG Swift in stock x_x What do you guys think? Edit: I also have a 250gb SSD and 27" LG Monitor as a secondary that I'll be taking from my current setup. Possibly the 1TB HDD as well.
Looks like pretty sweet setup. If you're not in a hurry to buy ssd, id wait a month or two for 850 evo. Just get a platinum fully modular 850w psu and you're set.
Well I already got the 500gb 840 evo. I think I should be good on space with a total of 750gb for now. I do plan on getting an 850 in the future though. I'll check out the PSU as well, thanks.
PM Erock, he may be able to find a way for you to buy an ROG Swift more easily. One thing on your build, I see you have two lines for RAM and both are 8GB kits. That is fine and all if you want to go that way, but it would be better for future expandability if you went with a single 16GB kit to start with.
Will do, thanks. I got 2 sets of 4gb sticks because they were pretty cheap. I don't really see myself needing more than 16gb any time in the close future.
That is true, probably not in the lifetime of this build. And DDR4 will have taken over completely in a couple years so building an upgrade path is not a necessary right now.
Here's what I've settled on. The Intel SSD is coming from my current build.
Just a suggestion, but why don't you also check out the Acer XB280HK: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009658 Which is a 4K G Sync display(60Hz) that recently(I think) came out? It's sadly still a TN panel, but a considerable alternative to the Swift for the same price point.
Good call with the 144 Hz monitor! Be sure to head on over to Blur Busters and check out the lightboost/ULMB setting on the Gsync monitor. I miss my lightboost monitor. I swore I would never own another monitor without it, didn't really have a choice now that I have a laptop though. If you haven't decided on the cooler still, swiftech AiO coolers are a good option. I have nothing but good things to say about the H320 I used.
I considered 4k, but decided I wanted to play at a higher refresh rate so I chose 1440p at 144hz instead. Will do! Thanks
Really nice stuff in there, for sure. I've got two things to think about though: Going to 4 sticks of RAM can actually have stability consequences sometimes. So if it's just a matter of a couple bucks 8gb sticks may actually serve you better, even if you just stick to 16gb for the computers life time (I agree that you probably won't want to upgrade the RAM until you want a whoel new system anyway) And, also, tripling up on SSDs. I get it if you've simply got a TON of games you want to keep installed all the time or do some HD-intensive non-gaming stuff. But if a large part of your storage is video and music you're way more cost effective with a spinner as a media drive.
Interesting. I never heard of 4 ram sticks having stability issues. I've never run into problems doing it before. Hopefully I won't with this build. I also have 2 externals (1TB and 3TB) HDDs for all my media stuff so my SSDs will be for the most part all games.
Well the memory controller is dual channel, so adding the extra sticks actually ties onto the same circuits. The processors can do it, but there *could* be an issue. It is extremely rare for that to happen though and is most often the case when you run 4 sticks of mismatched RAM. All 4 of the exact same sticks should be no problem whatsoever. On this monitor, can the G-Sync be set to the "lightboost mode" like the ROG Swift? Where instead of syncing the refresh rate it pulses the backlight at each refresh. This has a large boost on motion smoothness and I find G-Sync to be kinda pointless on a 60Hz monitor, so that mode would be the only reason I would buy the Acer monitor.
The ROG arrived yesterday. Hooked it up to test it for a few minutes and it's awesome. Can't wait to use it with my new build. 1440p has soooo much screen space.
