Sort of what path of exile is now. Towns where people meet, and then venture into your personal world. Cash shop to buy cool looking cosmetics and you're on your way to slay robots while looking all pretty. I predict this will be a huge hit. I think even bigger then GW2 is.
Last time I checked GW2 was a huge hit that fizzled out in a matter of weeks due to issues with core mechanics and unrewarding gameplay. Color me interested from the video, Bungie is a studio that knows how to put out quality work.
Sure, if you consider Halo to be quality work. I personally see it as the downfall of all FPS games since 2001. Ever since Halo we have had boring gameplay and regenerating health for everything. Challenging games and rewarding gameplay went completely out the window ever since.
I read articles on this from Polygon, Penny Arcade Review and ArsTechnica and could not believe the amount of hype surrounding an announcement of something that didn't seem to actually exist. The closest thing the press who went to the "reveal" event got to see was video of two other non-media people playing the game. The "shared world shooter" marketing speak for "MMOFPS" made me actually laugh out loud. There was a comment left on one of the articles that was like, "so this is going to be like Firefall for consoles?" and I just thought, "YES. EXACTLY." Here's a quote from Jason Jones, project director of Destiny: “We did a bunch of ambitious things on Halo deliberately to reach out to people. We limited players to two weapons, gave them recharging health, we automatically saved and restored the game, almost heretical things to first-person shooters. Now nobody plays shooters the way they used to before Halo, because nobody wants to.†After reading that I came to the conclusion that I should never enter the gaming media business, because I'd have laughed in this dude's face. Oh, but in case it makes any difference to anyone, Ben Kuchera at PAR seems convinced that Destiny will hit PC... at some point in the future. He wrote a whole other article on it. He's so fucking in love with this non-existent game right now it's blowing my mind.
As someone who grew up on Doom and other older styled FPS, it has never bothered me. Different mechanics encourage different playstyles/tactics. To limit mechanics and say that regenerating health is "stupid" because it encourages and allows for more aggressive play which is far more interesting when your playing a super solider instead of a Crowbar Wielding Physicist. Half Life/Counter Strike/A Tons of Other FPSers had different mechanics that COD/Gears/and Halo, if you are looking for different styles over the generations it isn't exactly hard. I enjoy Halo, would I ever play it competitively online? No. I prefer the tight shots and pacing of Counter Strike. Did I enjoy the universe and level design? Yes. Is Bungie a good studio? High Polish on gameplay, mechanics, and level design. Yes, they are. It will be interesting to see if they grab ideas from Dust or vice versa. Now if I wanted to pick a personal pet peeve, I would say battlefield ruined Planetside 2 considering BO2 was more interesting. *shivers* : ) Edit: Nevermind, I can't even blame battlefield. SOE killed Planetside.
