My brother is looking to upgrade his computer and sent me a file for the parts he was looking at. I figured I would ask people that know more than me about such things. For starters, you're going to want a larger and faster OS drive. The Corsair Force is great but the minimalist 40GB doesn't leave any room for stored updates, etc. 60GB would be the minimum but really I'd recommend 100-120GB SATA III SSDs (Force GT) so you can even toss some programs on there you might want to have the high-speed loading time adjustment for. Might as well get the Core i7 2600k unlocked edition so you can overclock a bit higher. The price difference is negligible so it's like getting a fractional improvement for free. IMO get 16GB PC3 12800 RAM instead of 8GB PC3 17000 but that's just me. You really don't need a 1.2KW PSU for that rig unless you are planning to add in another graphics card or run an extensive array of other hard drives. Grab this GTX 580 instead, as it is Twin Frozr and also Manufacturer Refurbished, and $60+ less (rebate or no): http://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-N580GTX...eo_TV_Cards&hash=item4cff3261dc#ht_923wt_1396 I'd go with an acoustically padded case, like any recommended choice listed here: http://www.silentpcreview.com/section9.html The ASRock motherboard is nice but ASUS is #1. The rig I purchased from Enigma uses the Rev.1 version of the P8P67 but you can find any of the newer editions here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...00006654&isNodeId=1&Description=p8p67&x=0&y=0
Pretty much everything Blackice just said, but I dont like Ebay for graphics cards. RMAing a card from Ebay is normally pretty hard to do so I always buy from a reputable place like Newegg on those. 40GB is too small for an OS drive, and I dont see any normal hard drive there either. If he wants a small OS SSD then you must also have a decent sized mechanical drive to install things like games to as they wont fit on the OS drive. Games take between 15-20GB now days so you do need quite a bit of space. Another thing you can do is get a 1TB mechanical drive (7200rpm) and use that as your only drive, then use the 40GB drive as the cache. Z68 allows you to configure a small SSD as a giant cache partition to automatically cache your most used files from a mechanical drive in order to give increased access speeds for common tasks For a power supply, if not overclocking the CPU and only a single graphics card then you really only need 650w. Lets break it down: 125w for the CPU 250w for the graphics card 10w for the RAM 25w for the chipsets 30w for fans 15w for a hard drive That comes to around 450w of power draw, plus 25% extra for PSU degredation = you are looking at wanting between a 550-650w PSU. A 550w would do, but after a few years would be running close to max capacity. Power supplies tend to work best between a 70-80% load on them, hence wanting a 650w in order to have the best efficiency overall. If he plans on overclocking, then a 750w is the way to go. You cannot overclock the processor though, you need the "K" version to OC. Stock cooler should let you run 4GHz no problem on it. And since the RAM is cheap enough, the money saved on a cheaper PSU can go directly to another kit of that RAM. Comes out to the same price but then you have 16GB of memory which is really nice to have these days. Also that is a giant tower, is your brother sure he knows how large it is?
+1000000 for not getting items like graphics cards on ebay. thats an expensive game to play. I'd say blackice and enigma summed it up for you.
Yeah he should get 16gb of ddr3 1600, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233143 If he is thinking of going SLI it is not a bad idea to have a 1200w psu, I have one and will not have to worry about PSUs for a long time. However I do not trust that 'Coolmax' brand of PSU. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371032 That is the PSU I have, another reliable and more modular brand is Corsair for PSU. But for around 200.00 I would suggest going with a more reliable psu brand. I once had a coolmax PSU that fried an old mobo/cpu/gfx card, that is the only reason I seem to be bashing them. If he wants to buy refurbished the 580 is a good card.
also if he wants to do a SSD look into the new caching SSD from corsair looks pretty dope and for around 80 bucks it can be nice
Get the parts from Newegg and or tiger direct. They have way better deals and give free shipping and discounts. Blackice is pretty spot on with his corrections.
For the part changes these are what I would change to: one of the best PSU on the market: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121088 better SSD and a proper size: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167095 average hard drive in good size: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148840 RAM (x2): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226223 However I would also like to point out that the new motherboard and chipsets should be out next month or two, and the new processors will be out end of may or early June I think it was. They will be a little bit faster, have PCI-E 3.0, and use less power. Might be a good idea to wait just to get the newest stuff rather than have the old gen a month or two after you buy
side note for enigma ... I can get a good deal on a 32 gb cache SSD from corsair ... pro / con? I wanna get it if i can nab it for 50ish
aha... yeah. I wrote that. and worst of all, i wasnt even attempting to troll. Its early.... sorry. 32gb CACHE drive... got it. disregard... ::facepalm::
You can put win7 on a 32gb ssd. I would say don't go intel at all but that is just me. I like the new 990FX mobos with the 8 core amd proc. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...00006650&isNodeId=1&Description=990fx&x=0&y=0
yeah i did some more research so a cache drive is VERY good if you only have one drive it seems I have 3 hard drives 1 os 1 for games 1 for music/movies so i do not know how well a cache drive will work in a multi HD system
