Okay, so I got my new system a couple of months ago thanks to Engima on here. Everything is running sweetly! :D

Only issue is that I now need to retrieve a few files off my old HDD which is IDE. I wasn't aware that the m/b was SATA only when I ordered it lol so I haven't been able to connect it up.

Anyway, I've had a look around and would something like this do the job of just being able to grab those files and stuff? I won't be using it often, only when I need to access/store stuff that I rarely use/need.

    Any advice appreciated :)

Should work for what you need it for may need a ribbon cable to connect the drive to it. I forget which way the standard went on that old stuff. That looks like a female connection on it though.

Honesty, I would just go for a cheap external enclosure via ebay for ide. Prolly get one new for 20£ That way you can get it off/and other still use it for nonsense pics or what not. They make a Hot swappable ide and sata vertical click in but that is more money however if you have alot of drives it great. . If I was home I could link the pic. Ie http://m.ebuyer.com/190604

damn gents, you are trying to reinvent the wheel. I instantly thought of the hard drive enclosure option. How many you want? Seriously, I have like five. just sitting here.

Oh, my understanding was he wanted to access the data and be done with the drives after copying wanted stuff over. I can't imagine why you'd want to continue using the thing long term.

My reasoning behind still using them is the fact i have around 50gb of photos from uni/mountains etc stored on them that i still want to access :p Going to generally use them as a temp backup for the pics and my music until I can get myself a decent external HDD and a new SATA :)

I know the local computer parts store (microcenter) just got a MASSIVE- I mean MASSIVE shipment of western digital hard drives. They had been pretty low for weeks and they got basically and entire truck load in. They had hard drive boxes piled in the corners up to the rafters. They put on a pretty good sale. I got a 1tb for around a hundred bucks. Seeing as how I was going in there with the intent to get on half that size for the same price, I left a happy camper.

I had heard there was a bit of a hard drive shortage for whatever reason. I guess thats over now.

Thai Flooding Crisis. And nope, still going strong. They just found a profit sector and bought literally as much as they could hold.

Expect HDD prices to be inflated for a few years because of it. Entire factories need to be rebuilt.

Supposedly Western Digital is almost back on track to full production, at least according to their press release. They had estimated to be back up completely by March or April. Seems kinda fast to me but who knows. I really hope hard drives come back down to $60 for 1TB. I need a few more big drives and have been trying to hold off until prices are back in line.

yeah it'd be nice. Seagate sure has benefited from the demand, though. Their share price has soared.
