So.. I did this once, back in the day which was fine and dandy. Only problem now, is I don't remember how to do it. I remember using winamp and shoutcast but that's about it. So here is the question though: I have an actual terrestrial radio station on a dial in gainsville, FL WERF 95.7 Previously, a man working for my uncle who runs the station, was broadcasting the local High School football, baseball games, etc... and then they would pick it up on the internet and broadcast it through the actual radio station on 95.7 My Question to ya'll is this: How can I stream to a website that they already have set up so that they can pick it up on their side and broadcast it through the radio? My initial thought was this: My Computer -> ShoutCast -> Broadcast to certain IP of website -> Pick up over internet -> Broadcast on the actual radio station If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know, I am trying to figure this out asap for my uncle because the guy who previously did it just left them and high and dry after he hornswoggled them out of a lot of money.
I have a friend who works in radio, and might have an answer. I'm seeing him later today so I'll get back to you if he's got the answer.
Welp, he says your set up is correct. Otherwise you'd stream directly computer to computer which is a pain. He also suggessted doing test runs before broadcast in case of buffering issues. The other archaic method is bypassing the net altogether and using a phone line.
I don't know much about radio broadcasting, but I'm assuming the technology is similar to regular audio equipment; Chances are you need to plug a cord that goes into the computer's speaker slot, and the other end goes into a port on the mixer (or whatever device all the microphones or other audio devices hook into). I would think it would be a normal headphone jack on the computer end, and either a large size (1/4) or a funky 3-pronged connector on the radio side. (I forget the exact names of the connectors.)
Rael that is exactly what I was thinking.. So now I just need to find the software to do it.. Thinking of doing ShoutCast through winamp, but I might just drop the cash on Sam Broadcaster which is amazing shit btw... Thanks rael! Side note, do you know how to setup a link for it on a website? I think I do, but not sure though.
He said ShoutCast has its own program? He may have been thinking of winamp actually. But as for a website, the faq says you can embed the pls file in a website, and in your server settings change the default player when it is queried. As for taking this and broacasting it, I think Darulians idea is the most headache free unless your stations' broadcasting program has a function for picking that up; it would provide better sound quality that way. If you have specific's you run into, I can shoot him an email with em, as he was kinda sparse on the whole thing. I showed him your post on my phone and he literally said you had it correct. I've done a few segments discussing "tech stuff" on his radio show a few times and he's usually pretty on top of his stuff.
Very nice.. Yes, shoutcast is usually a plug in for winamp. But I will test it and see what I can't do. Thanks rae!
I am trying to figure out how to get the server actually running. I have tried following their guide, I have the server running and I can connect to it. But I can only connect to localhost. I tried having my brother connect to my ip address and switch the server config to my internal IP but it wasn't having any of that. So I am kind of stuck as to how to get the server running because everytime I try to change the config files it never works at all.
Something we may do for now anyways to get it back up and running is they have a computer there with Skype on it. Only problem is that they have a sat connection in the transmitter site. Until I can get the Server issues fixed with shoutcast I think this may be the way we can go if the sat connection holds up that is.
So, the shoutcast runs off your computer specifically? Did you need to forward ports? Do you have a link to the set up procedure?
Its not gonna run from my computer.. I am just trying to get it setup so I can figure it out for my brother. Since he is the one who is going to be the one broadcasting
Check your ports first. Usually a localhost dump is bad port setup either in router or the wrong port being listed to by the server in the settings. If they are correct, something else maybe using the port which you can check but I forget the cmd off my head. If they are correct, I'll go find that.
I also am having some issues with the actual server being setup.. I tried to create my own config file using their gui but it didn't really work as far as I could tell... I will keep trying and see if I can't get this to work. Thanks for all the help so far rae! =)
when I get home from work tonight, I'll try and set my own up and see if we can diagnose this. while we wait, I want to run a cmd window and type netstat -aon. It's gonna spit back a shitload of stuff so you can either post it here in a /quote or pm it to me. I'm also gonna need to know what port the shoutCast server is running off of.
