I'm browsing for hardcore gaming headsets (circumaural) and really could use some recommendations on today's quality choices.

For instance, this set: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826254009 looks both awesome and affordable, but only one person has tried it and reviewed it.

What I'm looking for is a great, quality sound experience with a microphone that also sends fairly hq audio. What I prefer to do right now is just wear my headset for the mic and keep the 5.1 surround sound with my box sub, and I know there's a reasonably priced headset out there that just blows the doors off of that in mostly every aspect.

    Any recommendations?

Sennheiser PC350 headset, this one takes a week or so of use to break in some before it starts sounding amazing, and if you do the "Hero Mod" it can really sound good.

They use the same drivers as the HD595 headphones, very nice sounding.
If you do not do the hero mod on that headset, they sound best when matched with a warm sounding opamp(or tube amp) and neutral(or neutral/warm) DAC.
If you DO do the Hero Mod, then matching with just neutral sounding equipment is best as the headphones themselves get a VERY warm feel to them.

Steelseries 5hv2's definitely lack in any low end. I owned those for a while but dumped them cause I wanted something that sounded better. Still good if you dont care about the low end though. They had good high's, better than most gaming headphones I have heard.

ok honestly I know you are kidding Sam, but a setup like is that AMAZING. If you can afford it, do it. These are the speakers you should get:

and place them on either side of your chair facing directly at you. Power them with a nice amp. You dont need something with a lot of power as normally you are drawing only a watt or less per speaker, just something with great damping factor and and good frequency response. I cant remember the name of the amp I used when doing that, it was a cheap 1 rack unit amp but it was high-end in specs. This setup was the most amazing sounding computer setup I have ever heard, it just sounded so perfect.

The one drawback is you cant use a microphone with it very easily. You must use push to talk, and you cannot have it set to hear yourself, unless you want to make your ears bleed from massive feedback. You will also need to turn on all the phase cancellation, echo cancellation, and other options you can find in your sound card's control panel. Too bad I dont have any pictures still of my old setup like that... I still have the speakers I just couldnt fit them in the right spot when I moved into where I am staying now so I decided not to use them at all.

You could go with an amp like this to power the speakers:

    and the speakers:

i dont know, on a more serious note, i do enough damage to my ears at work, and you only get one set so im gonna try to reduce the damage by not blowing my face off with sound explosions. I get close enough to real ones often enough to get some ringing.

I like to use these. Absolutely love them. So comfy, great sound quality, cable is not made out of crappy stuff.

Only the most expensive Turtle Beach things are good, and you can find much better sounding things elsewhere still.

Although most people don't know what great sounding headphone are, so for the majority of people even average Turtle Beach headphones sound amazing cause they just haven't heard better. SO its all about your own experience with things as to whether you think one things sounds good or not.
