What do you guys expect from a company that installed rootkits on their customer's PC through their audio CD ? And when confronted with the fact, its director said he didn't give a shit about it because the average joe consumer doesn't know what a rootkit is ? Hubris, arrogance, total lack of respect for their customer, and illegal actions that would put you in jail if you, as a person, did it. If you knew about the rootkit fiasco and still gave true personal information to Sony, you were simply in denial of reality and I have no sympathy for you. If you didn't know, you should have paid attention to people warning you about Sony and do your own quick research (wiki ?) instead of being a nice little sheep, herded by their marketing (admittedly one of the best in the world).
Yes but it also means never developing credit. Which means never buying a car without insanely high interest, same for houses if you can get approved at all. Unless you intend to save for 5-10 years(Twice that for a house) and pay in cash.
That is a minor flaw in the issue. Cars I can get around, the house, well the market here is pretty cheap so saving up for a one is not out of the question. I do have an ace in my sleeve though. My wife has good credit.
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/...ain-12700-non-us-cc-numbers-feared-stolen.ars Who wants to defend sony now?
Can't say this has changed much for me; I wasn't ever going to buy their stuff anyway. But it's not exactly cheap for existing users to switch consoles.
Sony shouldn't need to be defended they where robbed every bit as much as a bank gets robbed at gunpoint. As I said in my previous post the internet is not secure and it is not safe anything connected to the internet can be broken in to no matter what security it has. Look Sony has become a pretty shitty company in-terms of what they think they should be entitled to in terms of the hardware they sell and I totally disagree with most of those opinions but that has nothing to do with this and is mostly the fault of weak willed politicians taking the bribes from industries to word even the well thought out laws as vaguely as possible with as many loopholes as possible so that companies like Sony think that they are in fact entitled to think the way they do. Could they have had better security more then likely yes would it have mattered against the concentrated attacks they have been receiving lately probably not. The very nature of the way the internet works makes it so there can never be a totally secure computer connected to the internet.
Well if it couldnt be stopped why hit the PSN? Why not the numerically superior XBL? Because their security has been shown to be awful.
XBL is hacked all to shit Microsoft just doesn't tell anybody nor do they purposely piss off the hacking community by trying to sue one of their public faces. Anonymous exposed Sony's vulnerability's and somebody took advantage of it before they could be closed that's all.
"Security Expert: Sony Knew Its Software Was Obsolete Months Before PSN Breach" http://consumerist.com/2011/05/security-expert-sony-knew-its-software-was-obsolete-months-before-psn-breach.html
This is karma for Sony. I hope they get it up the ass from lawsuits and lost business. They're just one fucked up corporation. *covers logo on Sony Bravia TV* >_>
From that ars article lets hope they dont hire HBGary rofl in all fooling aside, there are steps a company can take to minimize the overall fallout. You can keep touting that omfg the internet is an insecure place but the truth is if companies would stop cutting corners with their security and information assurance problems of this magnitude would be avoided or minimized. If you cut corners and refuse to follow best IT standard practice you deserve to have the damage maximized. If you provoke Anon, you deserve to have the damage maximized. Going back to your robbing a bank theory, whose fault is it if you forgot to lock the vault?
To be fair, trying to frame it like this or at least with this style of thought process is going to lead to circular arguments. The reality is that there are many aspects of fault, some of which are internal to Sony some of which are external and all should be acknowledged. Neither side is purely at fault for the entirety of the situation, but both should have to deal with their actions or in-actions that lead up to the totality of the event.
True but it should be the responsibility of a company to make sure that their users PII is protected.
What do they care about losing customer and credit card details if you guys keep buying their stuff ? Seriously, take 3 minutes of your life to think about it. In less than 3 month, people will ridicule anyone who warns them about buying anything from Sony. They will belittle the party-pooper who reminds them of a long past glitch, and who gets in the way of their buying the latest shiny stuff for immediate fulfillment. Remembering which companies are unethical is too burdensome. Forget the naysayers and spend away. If those companies were that bad, we would know about it right ? sic transit gloria mundi. PS. I remember a quote I read earlier today or yesterday : "Friends don't let Friends buy Sony".
