Anyone here into the whole tablet scene and picked up a playbook in the last few days? My initial impression of the device is quite solid and I will most likely purchase one in the coming week or two. I'm just waiting to hear about the magnitude of the problems people may be encountering. So far it just seems to be mostly nit picky juveniles with problems who are too dense to realise that with any new device there is an adaptation period and they also expect it to be exactly the same as other tablets out there. I personally like the form factor of it and it runs very smooth. My biggest concern was the viewing of pdf files as this will be it's main function for me and it does it wonderfully. The display is crystal clear and it also seems incredibly responsive. One of the first websites I visited was this one and was able to browse without difficulty. I viewed the BF3 3-minute trailer thread and was able to watch the video in full definition without slowdown just as I would if I were to watch in on my laptop (aside from the better picture on the playbook). I was able to switch between full screen and watching it just on the page flawlessly. Multitasking is not a problem from what I could tell and with 4 or 5 applications open it still ran smoothly. I found the OS quite intuitive and very clean. The only problem I encountered during my time with the demo models was the god awful power button which is minuscule. Solid first attempt at a tablet from RIM and I will be looking forward to spending more time with it once I get one in the next week or two.
Biggest problem i read was the fact that it didn't contain email integration like your blackberry does, you actually have to have a blackberry hooked up to it in order to gain that feature.
The storage size of tablets are too small for me to even consider a tablet, but from what I've seen, the Xoom kicks ass.
I do agree this is a downfall at this current point in time. It will severely limit who will buy it to those with a blackberry if this is a main selling point. It's too bad that it was supposed to be able to do all of this but at launch was severely lacking in a few areas. None of the areas are a deal breaker for me really. I'm fairly confident these software issues will be rectified as the hardware is solid and they are releasing updates almost daily. I've been checking the playbook forum at crackberry.com and the issues that continue to crop up seem to be fairly similar. All I know is nobody can ever be fully satisfied, they will always want more. I don't ever expect peoples problems to disappear. "The storage size of tablets are too small for me to even consider a tablet, but from what I've seen, the Xoom kicks ass." How much storage do you need on a tablet Right now on any given day I only have ~20gigs of storage on me and not nearly full. I definitely think 16gb is far too small and 32 is reasonable but 64 is just about right. I played with the xoom and it seemed nice. I didn't fiddle with it for too long though. The sales rep said that the display looks better for graphics but for live action the playbook is better just because of the flash integration (I couldn't really tell). The browser on the xoom wasn't quite as good from my tests of the two. However the rep said he preferred the xoom over all of the other tablets out there currently. I would really love to be able to have this before my spring courses start but I have a feeling I will be waiting a little bit longer to pick it up.
Well enough to store some of my movies and music. I find the 320GB storage of a laptop adequate, so if tablets can match that, I'll consider one. But it would still be a hard sell because tablets are more for leisure than for productivity. You can't take it to school and type out an essay... it wouldn't be practical.
Well you could if you wanted too.. But it would depend on the response time of the touch screen keyboard.. lol
