So my question for you, which was kind of a run off of my post on the XBox "720" thread here...Where does gaming go from here? If they do announce a new XBox, PS, or Nintendo whatchamacallit (Holy shit, Firefox identifies that as a word)...how would they go and even display it? What I mean is..Much like I said in the other thread, display formats have for the most part run its course when it comes to gaming. Screens can get bigger, sharper, prettier...Games themselves can run smoother, prettier, etc etc...But really...Would you drop 500 bucks on a system that just does the same shit as before just prettier? We can't blame gaming for this however. Developers are doing the best they can do with what they have. But is 3D really the only way to go? Think back when the PS1 and N64 broke through. They broke the mold with 3D effects. But since the breakthrough of 3D graphics in the mid 90's...The only thing that has changed is poly count. Rendering has gotten better, storage space, graphics capabilities, everything. Everything except delivery. I was reading an article on the 3DS a while back, where the 3D effects could actually give developers a new way to deliver a game. They could create really bold and dynamic effects when the game is delivering a serious part (high action of anger), and have much subdued effects when sorrow or sadness is evoked. Imagine that with more than just the 3DS. Imaging playing a full scale AAA title with that kind of effect. Not just 3D for the sake of being 3D...But different layers, depth and dynamics depending on the mood being portrayed in the game. Now think of other effects that could be done in unison with something else. Say motion gaming takes a foothold along with 3D gaming. Imagine playing a shooter where you are controlling the characters movements fully with something along the lines of Kinect. The graphics are in full 3D (stereoscopic, or with glasses). Imagine having to dodge an RPG that is literally flying at you. You ducking to the left and the 3D effect having that rocket literally wiz by your head? That would be incredible. But other than 3D, where do we go? Televisions are at their high point. You can't really get much better than they are. Hell, even Sharp adding yellow to the RGB set isn't going to do anything more than make what is all ready pretty prettier. So until we can get a new delivery system to games, where do we go from here? What do we expect? What can they deliver?
Not completely true, we still need a new technology that combines the color reproduction, response time, size, and black levels of plasma, with the more energy efficient LCD tech. And with increasing size, we need new communication technology to push out 2160p broadcasts to everyone and TVs that can display that resolution. New compression techniques also could be done to minimize the artifacting and noise in current TV boardcasts. Holographic is probably the way to go, but the problem right now is that it is only visible in rooms with no other light.
hahaha, first get the companies off of cable and into the fiber optics era before we even start to go beyond 1080i which is going to take another long time for a complete comnversion.....look how long it took us to switch to digital over the air. Plus companies need to start making cheaper higher hz tv's with better response times, monitors seem to be the only capable displays to give you under 2ms response times in stunning full 1080p
quantum dot displays...Yes I know they exist in labs..but I want one NOW!! holographic.. mmo npc have real time reactive responses from the likes the computer "watson" ..you can actually have a chat with them. quests are generated on the fly and areas generated for them in seconds.."the never ending MMO" fps games have new maps generated each respawn..never see the same map twice..unless you want too. The npc here also each have the power of watson...a city full of them. is that enough? or should I wish for more..I can keep going.

^^^ this that mmo would be the most revolutionalized game ever created. Actually being sucked into the computer space to actually be your character.
If I had to guess I'd say gaming companies are going to continue trying to further the RL movement technology like Wii and Kinect etc. I'd say the next step is something similar to the white ball technology that reads movements and mimics them exactly. If they can find a way to make that real-time and display it in-game and also have an AI that responds to your exact movements it could be pretty damn interactive. There's already systems for golf that can read your swing and hitting into a net it can tell you exactly how the ball was going to fly. (I know because we had this technology at the golf shop I worked at.) Imagine a karate game that actually judges your skill to kick and punch. if you can kick above your head or do some kind of backflip kick to the face than your gunna own at the game. If they could mix this with 3D technology you have yourself a system of games that not only promote you to be athletic and skillful but you will actually feel like you are in the game. That would be sick. Imagine a 3D call of duty game that actually judges your aim with a gun or an RPG that has special magic spells that require difficult RL body maneuvers. I'd just like games to keep going in the direction of RL skill of your body = skill inside the game. It promotes a better lifestyle in general for the hardcore gamer.
That would be a very good guess. I would have to side strongly with you on this. We can't have any VR gaming without proper motion control mapping.
I already own a 46" 240hz 3d LED TV for gaming but tv's can only go up to 60hz for PC's (probably the same for consoles). They only go over 60hz if you use dual link DVI adapters on pc monitors. 3d isnt very good on 240hz tv's either, their only decent on the 600hz plasma tv's but I dont like Plasmas because of the high energy consumption and the heat generated from the screen. 3d glasses arent very good either yet since their the first generation of 3d glasses, many of them break easily and have ghosting issues. Active Shutter 3d Glasses are also pretty expensive right now ($100+ a pair)
The problem is most people play video games because they can't do that kind of stuff in real life. It has to expound upon whatever natural talents or movement the person/controller puts in. Nobody wants to imagine/pay for being as mediocre in a game as they are in real life. Kinect and WII get away with it because its not really serious gaming. If they can take what they have now with the kinect, upgrade responsiveness and put in better movement controls (moving forwards/running etc) then you would have a real winner at least for shooters and slashers.
