    your last back-up ?

Come on guys, don't forget to make a copy of all data that is important to you.

Just did for mines and thought I'd write a reminder.

I have a 1TB Raid10 setup on my linux box that I 'snapsync' nightly. The drive is SMB mounted to my win 7 box for which all my valuable data resides.

One power surge and everything is gone though.

    I use 4 * 1.5 Tb drives.
2 are on my PC, the 2 others are a monthly updated copy, located on another PC, offline, 25 km away.
Both PC are protected by an UPS and only one is active at a time.
I shouldn't be able to lose both set at once.
(Unless the area gets hit by a big fking meteor ...)

I have an APC UPS with 20 - 30 minutes for battery life to power down.

The 'snapsyncs' go to DVD as well so I could care less if I loose a HDD or two etc.. Just buy a couple more HDDs (cheap now a days), rebuild the RAID10 and restore up and running.

On a more general note, everyone please keep in mind that nothing resists lightning. Do not hesitate to power down your system when thunderstorms occur.
No amount of fancy surge protector/UPS will shield you for certain.

What do you do when your first 1.5TB is full ? you buy another one.
And that one need to be backed-up too, so in fact you buy two and end up with 4.
Small price to pay though to avoid the slavery of backing-up to DVD-R ...

Developement tools, OS virtual images, anime pics, FLAC music, anime series/movies, and lately j-pop concerts in HD.
The anisummer 2009 concert is 40GB in full. I only kept 18GB of it, but still ... It all adds up fast.

    www.carbonite.com It's a beautiful thing.

And you should never have your back up in the same place as your primary. Off-site storage is the best option. If you have a fire at home are you sure only one of your HDD's are going to be hit?

If you can't do off-site even with as cheap as it is now, at least do two different forms of media.

In all honesty, if i lost all the data nothing was that important that id need to spend any money on making a backup of it... if you are downloading anime and other stuff its not like you paid for it anyway :/ but i do backup my itunes stuff since its music ive paid for onto dvds.

Sad part is that's still a copyright violation.
