This game is probably 5 years away from seeing store shelves, but I was thoroughly impressed with the tech demo videos they've released. A game like this has the potential to change MMOs as we know them. I've dreamed of a game like this for a very long time.

Watch the trailers in HD and DO NOT FAST FORWARD!! It spoils the immersion.

Unfortunately we won't see any type of "sci-fi" space exploration in our lifetime,
or really in the near future. Its sad really, and I wish I would live long enough to know we have ventured out of our system, let alone the milky way.

Back OT, so its kinda like Homeworld meets EvE? Pretty awesome either way.

All you need is a political leader with balls, but alas, we've run out of those a long time ago.

Before venturing out of the solar system, getting back to the moon would be a good first step :)

Agreed. Politics is the main hindrance of human progress in this world. Getting to the moon is a critical first step in restoring faith in a project that has lost its magic. If we did it 6 times within 3 years, I don't see what's so difficult about it. Unless...

Been following this game for a few years now and they have made some amazing progress with it so far. Hopefully within the next say 3 years perhaps, they should have something that we can all start playing.

Till then it might be worth giving Black prophecy a look
    http://blackprophecy.com/

At least its something to play in the near future, esspecially since jumpgate seems to have dissapeared.

And increasing funds to develop some type of fuel system capability of long-space travel (infamous Warp-drive, etc. etc. etc.) - so politics is one of the hindrance, but another one would be developing technology that's somewhat like we see in Sci-Fi, fusion drives/cells that are stable to produce energy for living quarters and most importantly, some type of steering/momentum. Or really just more "advanced" technology, we just don't have the capabilities of long-term space flight, unless its all classified and they just don't have the funds to properly implement it.

Of course, the main thing is just 1 step in the correct direction, back to the Moon would be nice, and then Mars.

I almost got a job with NASA and then a week before my interview they slashed their funding, along with my interview...

    We already have that.
    It's called nuclear energy.
Adapted and tested for rocket engines in the 70'.
Allows rockets to put thousands of tons into orbit in one shot, then to come back whole in a controlled manner using its engine.
Would allow crew to reach mars in days instead of months, avoiding dangerous irradiation from the sun.

But you need someone with balls to explain that one rocket that crashes pollutes way less than what the coal power stations release every day.(It uses especially designed pebbles as fuel, can't go critical).

Doctorie, this is only a less ambitious rehash of what was basically experimented earlier in the US.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biosphere_2

Your article mentions a 250 days long trip to get there, and same for the return.
That is precisely the point to avoid.

Such a long period in unprotected space will irradiate the crew to dangerous levels.
In order to prevent this, we would need to strongly shield their space vehicle, which would slow it even more.

It is a vicious circle from which we cannot escape with our current technology of chemical rockets.

Development of a much more powerful propulsion system is a prerequisite to manned space exploration beyond the moon (and would help immensely to set a permanent footing on it).

looks awesome. the transition from space to planets looks really well done.
I just hope its not wasted. like the planets being hella small or you cant do anything on them.

I didnt read up on it, so I dunno if its been explained

based on the vid looks sweet

Obama can't rewrite the laws of physics though. Even with money.
And I doubt he has the balls to launch a nuclear rocket program.

Now, I'd be very happy if he proved me wrong.
