Am I allowed to share a email I got from a soldier in Bagram Afghanistan?

  2. Even if it seems safe..someone here will make it controversial.
If its political, it will derail.
Maybe just send it to those that request it.

You seem to have doubts its safe..best go with your gut feelings.

Well I was asking because for some reason I seem to remember that politics was not allowed to be talked about in guild chat or on forums. It isn't that controversial imo, just the impression a soldier got of him from his visit.

Tazildanda, how do you know that this email is actually from a soldier in Bagram ?

    Shit if I know

    Signed like this though

    In service,
    CPT Jeffrey S. Porter
    Battle Captain
    TF Wasatch
    American Solider

    Don Herpen
    then his email

    American by birth
    Marine
    by the grace of god

I think it is a crime to pose as a government employee isn't it?

Also I believe it is a matter of public record who is in the military if said person isn't on a classified assignment. So you could search the same to see if it is actually that person, but no way in telling if it is really the soldier. Just like you can not prove it is the same person that posts on these forums every day.

  8. Yes politics is outlawed on the forums... Tends to cause people to hate each other.

Only if the person posing gets caught. And once an email has been passed around enough tracing the original author becomes very difficult, even if it remains tracable at each step. Throw in a few anonymous proxies, or people refusing to let you search their computer, and it becomes untraceable. And that's assuming it became widespread without being pushed through a spam relay or two.

And even if you trace the author, they might not be somewhere where they can be prosecuted over it.
Since you can't verify this at all, my advice would be to ignore it, even if posting political stuff was allowed. You don't want to be spreading unsubstantiated rumours as fact.
You mean, despite the person sounding like they did the previous day, and despite the poster knowing the login details that should be kept secret and despite there being no obvious incentive to change who is behind the keyboard ?

This email has no verification at all, and it is easy to think of people who would benefit from starting a lie like this. And a lot more people who would be willing to spread it on without caring if it's the truth or not.

Yizelin, how much time did you spend looking before you found that link ?

Not very, just a quick google found it for me. It does seem that it is an attempt at viral advertising by whoever actually sent this.

Well there are plenty of people who will believe any email they receive, then forward it on to their entire address book, without even considering the possibility that it might be fake. Like all the blogs it got posted on.

Is a link of the army officials officially debunking this claim.

Honestly, in a viral email sendoff like this, it may not have even been the actual person they signed the email with. Because I have seen stuff like this before, where these people just take random names and put it at the end of the email. But anyways, that link there proves it is a fake email.

It's a very good chainmail. It will target a lot of republicans who will then try to convert democrats. So the mail would be going back and forth.

While all that is happening, the original sender is farming email addresses which makes him lots of $$.

The guy who thought of this deserves respect. He's right up there with the best runescape scammer (posed as a female, married some guy in-game, kept up the lie for 3 years, then ran off with his belongings).

  14. oh rly? what if it was the other way around?

oh crap I posted something politics-like while talking about something else so it may give the wrong impression of what I actually meant!

    nvmnvm!!

purpose of the mail was: farming addresses.
    Content of the mail: moot

  16. So the whole thing was a scam which further shows us the evils of politics!

So a typical underhanded smear then ?
How is the original sender farming addresses from it ?

I haven't seen the email in question, so I'm assuming it's just plain text. Meaning that when you forward it on, the person who sent it to you doesn't get to know about it.
Not really. There have been plenty of chain letters before which people take as fact then send it on. Apart from being spread via email, this just looks like a typical smear.

interested in reading it taz, but i'mma go out on a limb and say its a fake. Most of the emails I've recieved about Obama or Mccain have been incredibly falsified. Or even their wives.

The point of the story, never believe anything you hear on the internetz without research first, especially about politics.

Yea I agree Anthy. At first when I read that I couldn't help but laugh and rub it in my moms face, who is a Democrat. But upon reading it the second time it became painfully obvious of just some viral marketing against Obama....such a shame, would have been fantastic if it was true.

If you don't personally know the soldier, it's obviously fake, and so is anything politics related in chain-mail.

I don't get chain mail-though, my email is clean enough to get spam every couple months. :D
